He was always a weak link in a strong defense. Always a bit over-rated, imo
Yeah, I'm surprised he caught on for another year somewhere. I just assumed he was done.

Are Stevie Y’s best days as a GM behind him?

Yeah, he seems to be getting bogged down. The progress is glacial.

For all the talk about “the mushy middle”, Detroit could serve as the poster child for the term. Been stuck where they’ve been at for quite a while.

As you know, Chef is no fan of the mushy middle. It’s like trying to swim for the shore in a rip ride. It achieves fuck all, so all you can do is swim parallel to the shore to stay alive - the mushy middle. But the mushy middle is what we do here in Vancouver, we are clinical about it, militant! Onward and noword - .500 hockey, wildcard hockey., middle 6 players galore and 2nd pairing players galore, tweeners everywhere. The torment, the tease…it’s all very real.

Yzerman's best days as GM were done when he got to Detroit. I wonder how much of that has to do with poor pro scouting. No one hits at 100%, but the misses with defensemen acquisitions are massive and don't seem to be just "hindsight" evaluations. Chiarot? Holl? And the guy you let go is Walman? (An imperfect player, to be sure, but clearly better than some of what stayed). Trading Hronek when the defense was already a mess? And then there was the goaltending mess -- several iffy goalies don't add up to a good one.

Its a decent forward group in Detroit, but the defense remains a wreck -- though now it is a wreck with a light at the end of the tunnel if ASP hits and Edvinsson continues to improve. Those 6-7 D talent-level flotsam and jetsam masquerading as 4-5 D will be done after this season and there's cap space to do something. But there's no history suggesting the right defenseman will be identified....
