Just Not ready

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Why not partner with one (or more) of VW, Hyundai, GM, or Rivian, and pour into their development and manufacture shit here? Sure, China looks to dominate, but why not compete with them instead of getting in bed with a country that wants to use their state ownership of corporation to create in-roads and dominate our political sphere?
Who is "we" in this context Mëds? Is it our government? Or a private company?

If I may….

Government opens the doors allows development without strangling constricted permit requirements. Then private in conjunction with an experienced EV company..

New production/assembly is going to the US South and Mexico due to lower labour costs. The government is going to have to do more that just relax permitting requirements. This is what trade deals are for and we would need to give something up.

Promoting Canada as an R&D centre is a bit more complicated. Long term I think we need to keep funding education, subsidise R&D at the university level, and maybe scoop up international talent that the US is discouraging with their immigration policies.

Chinese (and other foreign) purchases of real-estate, coupled with restrictive permitting and asinine treaty concessions (both government areas of responsibility) are the primary drivers of our ridiculous costs of housing (and living, cough cough, farm quotas, cough, supply chain) which necessitates higher wages and drives private costs.

As rats so astutely intimates…..

Fuck government.

Change out the asshat Liberals and that way of doing things, and start making Canada something worthwhile again.

And, no, I don’t think PP and his Cons are the answer, but at least a step in the right direction.

My "we" is a government regulatory function.

If your 'we" is the same, then you're saying our government should be partnering with foreign companies??? Please no.

I posted about this a month or more ago as the case was on the docket for the Supreme Court of Canada.

Democracy Watch was challenging Canada's Ethics Laws that prevent Judicial review decisions made by Canada's Ethics Commissioner. The case revolved around the Ethics Commissioner clearing Justin Trudeau of any ethics violation during the WE Scandal.

Recall Justin handed over 100's of millions to the WE Charity to run Canada's youth programs during COVID. Justin was close friends with the brothers running the charity and had done paid speaking engagements for them before he entered politics. His wife was and Ambassador for the Charity, his brother and mother were both regular paid speakers for the group, His then Finance Minister resigned over the affair when it became known his daughter worked for the charity.

To no real surprise, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that part of the Ethics Law that bans judicial review is unconstitutional. The Public must be allowed it's Day In Court and the Supreme Court of Canada is the final arbiter.

This has far reaching ramifications.

The Conservative Party of Canada has openly discussed limiting court challenges to resource and development projects. David Eby has been a fan of limiting court challenges. Probably his most high profile is ICBC.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

I was just listening to discussions on the Ford/Carney "fight" over the Billy Bishop airport and the Alto rail. One talking head mentioned that Carney wasn't at the opening of the Gordie Howe bridge. I know there were a couple of reasons and theories. None of them that I find even close to being acceptable. This project literally built a bridge between 2 countries. To not be at such a celebration as the head of the country that built the bridge is unfathomable.

And, in what I find to be quite ironic (and not that fake simile crap from Alanis) is how the bridge is named after a guy who's nickname was "Mr Elbows", but the guy who became Prime Minister on an "Elbows Up" campaign was just too scared to officially open the "Mr Elbows" bridge.
The Cup is soooooo ours!!!!!!!

Latest car from China has over 1,000 km of range and recharges in under 10 minutes. Yeah give me some of that!

The 1,000 km range is based on Chinese CLDT standards, which give about 30-35% better numbers than the EPA testing standards. This is due to how the tests are done.

There's a few cars on the market here that get that average.

Still, 740km of range is about what my truck does .

And charging from 10% to 97% in nine minutes, the same as gassing up my truck.

Add to this that the cost of driving electric is roughly 20% of the cost of driving petrol.
And there are less moving parts, so less maintenance needed.

Got my first EV, a Skoda Enyaq 80x Sportsline last summer and it's the best car I've ever had. I'm loving it.
But, yeah, not Chinese. Czech.

In theory the range should be 504 km, but that test cycle is at 23 C, indoors and at an average speed around 30kmh. Makes no sense.
In reality I get 400+ in the summer and roughly 330 in the winter. Takes roughly 30 minutes to charge, so I plan a lunch break on road trips that exceed 400 km. Just visited my old hometown of Umeå, 500 km up north. Really smooth driving. There's no noise, excellent torque which facilitates passing slower vehicles. Then during the week I was up there I also went to check on my forest, some 170 ha situated some 200 km inland from Umeå.

And of course, apart from the road trips, I just plug it in at home. No need to ever visit the gas station. Saves a lot of time.

Have my eyes on the Volvo XE60 P12, which should have a range of 810 km. Even if it in reality probably is closer to 700, that should elminate my need for charging stops. I don't think I ever drive more than 700 km in a day.

And yeah, some of the Chinese cars have better performance, but I'm not sure I trust them 100% yet. From what I hear they seem to have more problems than the European EVs. But over time they should be fine. The early Japanese cars were crap, and now they build some of the most reliable cars there are. I'm sure that within another ten years or so the Chinese will have sorted their problems.

But you see lots of BYD, Zeekr, MG, Lynk & Co, etc, in the streets here.
Our local buses are BYD. So nice to walk past the main bus stop down town without having to inhale the toxic diesel fumes of yore.

I like my whisky neat, so fuck ICE
