Well, generally speaking, nobody buys anybody out unless they're in cap hell.
But he was the clear top candidate, even when healthy in 17/18 he played under 17 min a game, and had gone from 36 points to 10 points.
Stone has been declining for 3 straight years, culminating in the injury-shortened season. At this point, I'd be a little surprised if he's even in the NHL next year.
I'd take him on as a Luke Schenn-type - park him on the farm, recall and see if he rekindles his career when injuries strike. But I don't think he's an everyday NHLer at this point.
