Montreal now has to unload salary. But really, it’s a good deal for them. Worst case is that Dobson doesn’t get back on track to where he was and is a slightly overpaid top 4 d man. But if he’s an all situations 24 mins guy who scores 65 points, under $10M a season is a deal in the cap increasing world.

Also shows you that Hughes is going to cost what, $12M?

Yeah, Hughes is going to be the highest paid Canuck in a couple of years.

Coyle and Wood for Brindley, a 2d, and a 3d.

I suspect the Avalanche were motivated to clear space and make it easier to put a little more capital into the defense, though there could be bigger moves on the way. Still, I don’t think it’s a bad return for what looks motivated by cap space. Brindley has tons of potential but is undersized and didn’t fare well in his first AHL campaign. Just 20 yo, though.

Columbus is getting a second line center for a team that wants to miss the playoffs and a third line center for a team that wants to make the playoffs. Wood is sort of like Drew O’Connor, imo. Similar salary. Fast guys with no vision. Can make things happen with speed. Not bad defensively. Wood has a little edge on offense (imo), O’Connor and edge on the pk. But it’s a good way to think about the value.

Query whether Coyle should have been a Vancouver target. Same age and contract length as Kane, Coyle would have played the position most in need, but they play different games and provide similar overall value in different ways. One thing notable about Coyle is his good health.

Oh, it’s a conditional 2d. Whatever that means in this case, haven’t seen the report. But that does materially change the trade. Let’s imagine that Wood is given away for free in this deal. They want the contract gone for both, but Coyle provides some value over the contract add the Avalanche are a worse team on the ice without him; but they are likely totally indifferent to having Wood at this point.

Had the exact same thoughts. Only thing is I hear Nucks are on Barz's no trade list. The dude just doesn't want to play here.

Many have moved on from Bo and prefer to leave him in our past. But given their current situation and the limited options out there, if the 15th and a sweetener brings him home, I don't think that's the worst thing you can do.

Wouldn’t surprise me if they are going to try for 3 or 4 OA, and do this like it’s 1999. One or both of Montreal’s picks could be part of that. And Chicago and Utah are reportedly open to it.

To be fair Mëds has plenty of company. The Petey hate is everywhere, like non-stop 24/7.

And lots of rumors suggesting Pageau is being shopped, and there are always rumors about Barzal.

They built a veteran team of mediocrity. Now is the time to change it up.

My guess on Dobson is that they were ambivalent about his value at $10M with Schaeffer as the guy they want as a. All situations #1 and they thought they’d get a good return now for Dobson. And they got an okay return—but the nature of the return (picks) suggests rebuild mode is beginning. Honestly they don’t need to do it all at once. Some players are better dealt In season.
