It's almost like cap space matters in a rebuild.

Unsurprising.

If it weren’t for the Sabers, Columbus would be the Canucks of the US-based teams.

I found it interesting on a podcast the other day that they referenced Lawrence Gilman who allegedly has said that the trade protection clauses are a problem around the league. Wasn’t he one of the architects of many a contract that included trade protection of some sort when he was AGMLG?

Sounds like an Andersson trade for the Flames is pretty close. Hearing Detroit is the front runner.

Detroit has been looking to fill the void in the top 4 since they dealt Hronek.

Curious to see what Andersson will fetch. 1st and a 2nd tier prospect?

The asking price is supposed to be a 1st, a "top prospect" and something else. We'll see if Detroit pays the cost, if so and they end up paying more for Rasmus Andersson (b. 1996) than they got for Filip Hronek (b. 1997) it will be, um, interesting to consider the wisdom of spending assets in order to go without a top four defenseman for nearly four years.

Good point dbrr.....also....further to that the rumour that Hughes was wanting to go to Detroit but Stevie wanted contract protection to make it happen.

Be interesting to see if they get that with Andersson.

Yeah, for that reason I'd be a little surprised if Detroit pull this trade off since Yzerman doesn't seem to find the risk acceptable and Calgary haven't been willing to let teams talk to Andersson. Maybe if they get negotiations right to the threshold Conroy relents.

In other news, Chris Drury sent out a letter to fans today announcing the Rags are "retooling" - we'll probably see Panarin and uhhhhm Carson Soucy on the market sooner rather than later

I think we're starting to see who among the bottom of the clag of bunched-up teams are starting to fold on their seasons. The Rangers joining Vancouver, Calgary - and I would argue Columbus is in there having fired their coach and it's way too late for even a guy like Bowness to pull a St. Louis and storm back into the playoffs.

The problem with this is management may soon see the market flooded with players available - and then it turns into a buyer's market.

In that case, perhaps the better bet is for management to get ahead of things and offload their assets for whatever they can get before the market gets oversupplied and their left "with not enough time" to get a decent deal done.
