Ronning's Ghost wrote: Fri Dec 12, 2025 12:05 am So he's... what ? A good second line centre, defensively responsible, but not an intimidating physical presence, nor a reliable iron man workhorse. Maybe he finds some synergy with some wingers who suit his abilities and manages to generate more offensive spark, but he will probably never be able to earn that contract.
If this is the case, the Canucks are totally boned for the duration of his contract. $11.6M for a 2nd line pivot is no recipe for success.
From what I've seen and read, the hockey world still considers EP as a #1 centre in the league, not sure many still consider him elite ...

If you think $12 million for a first line centre is an overpayment in a league with exploding revenues and franchise values in the multiple billions and expansion fees in the billions you are going to be very disappointed with future contracts...

Revenues are projected to be just under $7 Billion this year ...

See rikster…..this is why you’re the resident pretentious ass hat. I didn’t say that. I said IF that’s what he is. But you carry on attempting to be the resident educator.

Time to get a new 1C. Highly unlikely that Cootes will be it.
RNH is seeming like a good comparison here. A dependable pivot with above average offense.

He did have a blip of a 100pt year later on in his career, so maybe there is hope for Petey yet. Just needs great linemates.

Maybe the Hughes trade shouldn't be so focused on a centre - but a couple of wingers for Petey, one big bruising bastard LW (Think Tom Wilson-esque), and one RW that can drive play at an elite level (think Garland, but bigger).

Doesn't solve our 2nd or 3rd line issues. But its a start!

RNH eh? Hmmm. That is a good comparable.

Too bad Petey already had his “blip”.

Beauty of a question posed to Allvin today in the media Q&A after trading Hughes.....

When you look at past Stanley Cup winners that were consistent contenders, you see names like Barkov, Crosby, MacKinnon, guys who can lead and produce at that 1C level, do you think Elias Pettersson can be that sort of number one center?

A very telling pause from Allvin before he said yes and then immediately moved on to talk about how it's not about one player and didn't mention Pettersson again.

That pause did not go unnoticed by yours truly, and his endorsement was lacking conviction.

I think it's becoming glaringly obvious that Petey is the common thread of player discontent. I am wondering if he isn't the real locker room cancer.

Just flush the petulant, entitled little shit for a bucket of pucks or a shitty contract near its end in return.

End this core for good.

Haha, I love how you can read a pause. But you can't read the room.

Keep on keeping on Mëds. Maybe Rick can help with the intelligence.

Topper’s take in the Hughes trade thread is enough for me to swallow them sending that pick if it means purging the room of that cancer.

Hughes presence was a problem. The team had to get rid of all it’s toxicity and Hughes presence was apart of it being he wasn’t invested spiritually/emotionally. So I only have this to say to Quinn “fuck off, the feeling is mutual”.

It will be interesting where he signs. The Wild are taking a gamble but with Guerin as the Chief of America’s International Men’s Hockey Team and program teammates - Boldy and Faber, they may be able to convince him to sign. Minney gets Quinn closer to his Michigan home. Close to home.

Guerin have the the autonomy to offer Daddy Hughes a role with Team USA? That could be an opening off-the-books perk in negotiations lol.

Minnesota is the only team able.to offer Hughes a full pull, 8 year, bonus laden, front end paid dollars, new deal before the Sept 15 CBA amendments.
