I think if you are going to do it at all, you want to do it all at once, under a "new GM cleaning house" banner. Then, as you say, to protect the reputation of the organization around the League, scrupulously observe any trade protection you give out in contracts you sign.Reefer2 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 10:53 amA GM can always overcome it if they try hard enough, but you do not want to be seen as an asshole and not a place where FA want to go so it is a fine line to balance.Ronning's Ghost wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 10:52 amThese are frequently brought up as reasons why the re-build was not accelerated, but Garrison had trade protection and was moved out expeditiously. Re: 2019 NHL ENTRY DRAFT - Vancouver
If he shot right, I’d take Byram with the 3rd pick, but he doesn’t so I’d go with Podkolzin. He is higher rated in most mock drafts so I think he’d be considered the best player available. He shoots left and could slot right in with Pettersson and Boeser.
Of course we won’t pick 3rd or 2nd or 1st overall, but we can all have fantasies. Have the Canucks ever won anything in a lottery?
With lottery luck we could have had Perreault, and Crosby. I have no idea how many other top picks we had a chance at and failed in the lottery?
Well it is a good thing we have a genius making later picks for us, because we have no hope at winning the lottery. It’s sad, but that’s why we have the term “Canuck Luck”.

Meh sure it would be great if Byram shot right but it ain’t a dealbreaker for me. He could anchor one pair while Quintin could anchor the other. As much as I like Hughes, I don’t see him as an all situations type guy like Byram.

Re: 2019 NHL ENTRY DRAFT - Vancouver
Well 2 years ago i was at the front of the pitchfork and torch crowd. Since that point hes loaded up the top 6 and now is focused on the ass end. A rebuild takes years and seeing the makings of a contender developing before our eyes should be comforting.Diehard1 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 8:37 amWe have Petey, Hughes, Bo, Demko and Brock - no argument they are up and coming young stars. Who is the next one? Lind? Really bad year. Same. Dahlen? Traded for a downgrade. Juolevi? Just missed a whole season, can’t rely on him yet though I’m still hopeful. Woo? At least 2 years away, more likely 3. MacEwen? Might be a 3rd liner if everything goes well. Who are these ‘plenty more developing in the wings’ you’re referring to?Uncle dans leg wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 8:25 amYet here we are...a stable full of up and coming stars with plenty more developing in the wings.
Thats pretty well the textbook definition of a rebuilding team dude.
I get the narrative, we have this great farm system and lots coming, but reality is it’s just not there, at least not yet. This year’s draft can add more talent but the point is more picks are needed.
Juolevi is the pivotal asset that can really have a massive impact next year. Spending a year recovering means we have no idea whats there, good or bad. The tools are there...6'3" smooth skating, puck moving right shot defenseman who dominated in junior. If he takes the predicted step forward he should be capable of...look out
Woo trending like a 1st rounder cant be marginalized simply because isnt quite ready. Hes a rising asset
This Rafferty kid is NHL ready right now (from the 2 game sample size...ya ya i know). Sure hes not a drafted player but he is the fruit of your GMs loins.
Up front is the least promising prospect wise but i suspect thats where we spend our 9th pick. Boldy looks like a Benning type of player to my untrained eye.
There is still Virtanen who could tale a significant step forward...although i dont see it myself. Prime trade bait potentially?

Re: 2019 NHL ENTRY DRAFT - Vancouver
Sorry UDL, he hasn’t loaded up the top 6 whatsoever. They are still two top six forwards short even if you include Pearson as one.
Juolevi didn’t dominate junior either. He was the third best d man on his team in his last junior season. I’m hopeful he can eventually become a decent player.
I’m more confident in Jett Woo having an impact than Olaf. That said he actually dropped in a redraft by Hockey News. They had Tyler Madden jumping up to 31, but Woo slipped a bit.

One thing we all seem to agree on is the pussy factor in our forward group. This is a huge issue

The whole team is soft. Even when Gudbranson was here they were soft. Sure he’s a better fighter than Schenn but he is equally as shitty a player. Virtanen and Roussel are all this team has for pushback and that’s not very much.Uncle dans leg wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 11:40 am One thing we all seem to agree on is the pussy factor in our forward group. Michael Haley went through waivers at the deadline and we didnt grab him. The team doesnt view it the issue the fans seem to. Hey Rikster - I agree that higher picks are undoubtedly the way to go, which is why I always advocate trading guys who aren’t coming back or perhaps aren’t needed should be traded for 1st, 2nd or 3rd rounders. Hamhuis, Tanev, Edler are guys who come to mind that could have been flipped for high picks to achieve this. Yes there are more, those are just off the top of my head.
I also agree we probably need another 2 solid drafts to have enough talent to have a long term competitor. I don’t mind being patient as long as we see progress, and this year was good progress for the young core and questionable progress for most of the rest of the young guys.
Bieksa, NTC, traded
Kesler, NTC, traded
Garrison, NTC, traded
Phaneuf, NTC, traded
Kessel, NTC, traded
Nash, NTC, traded
Skinner, NTC, traded
Nyquist, NTC, traded
Simmons, modified NTC, traded
Cogliano, modified NTC, traded
Brassard, modified NTC, traded
Boyle, modified NTC, traded
And so on, and so on. There are many, many examples of players being traded with NTCs, NMCs, or modified NTCs so why do we Canuck fans seem to think Jimbo is trying to do the impossible? Sure it becomes more difficult, but we can’t act like this team is the only one that has these issues.
We all know why Hamhuis wasn’t traded (lack of preparation by Nucks), and Tanev and Edler are simply guys Jimbo has had no desire to trade. We can debate whether or not that’s a good decision, but let’s not make it seem like Jimbo had no chance because of these clauses. There’s always a way if there’s a will.
Re: 2019 NHL ENTRY DRAFT - Vancouver
Not sure these guys are the definition of up and coming stars. Prospects sure, but up and coming stars? Rafferty? Unlikely though it would be nice. Hopefully a few of them develop but they aren’t even close to the Bo, Brock, Hughes or Petey level of star prospect.Uncle dans leg wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 11:23 amWell 2 years ago i was at the front of the pitchfork and torch crowd. I don’t care if Jimbo drafts or signs a player as long as he finds talent, so not sure what you’re getting at with that.
Boldy is a very nice property, great hands, good size. His skating is only average so it’s the only red flag for me, but I’d be happy with him as well.
Re: 2019 NHL ENTRY DRAFT - Vancouver
I do like the idea of drafting Soderstrom, he’s a badly needed top 4 RHD. As much as I like Stecher’s game he’s more of a #4 than a #2/3 and Soderstrom could be that. I do question picking for need as I think some of the forwards are slightly better picks, but I do like the Preds strategy of grabbing D in the middle of the 1st round as they always have high trade value if nothing else.RoyalDude wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 8:55 amI got a feeling the Canuck scouts like one of the two Swede defensemen. If a forward? I believe we are picking from Zegras, Krebs, Boldy. I think Dach and Turcotte will be gone but maybe one of them as well. For sure gone - Hughes, Kakko, Podkozlin, Byram and Cozens. After those 5 are gone there are 3 picks before ours. I believe Turcotte and Dach will be one of those 3 picks. So yeah we are picking from Zegras, Boldy, Krebs and the 2 Swedes
Adding Soderstrom to a D pool that includes Hughes, Juolevi, Woo, Rathbone, Sautner, Brisebois and Chatfield would make for a solid future if Jimbo goes that route.
Re: 2019 NHL ENTRY DRAFT - Vancouver
More or less how I see it - Jimbo made it pretty clear he didn’t want to trade a Edler, which is fine, but it’s not like he couldn’t have given the NTC. Edler would have waived if you made it clear he was gone IMHO. Would that have been smart? Probably not as he will be good to have back there next year, but it was an option regardless of how it’s being painted.Blob Mckenzie wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 10:27 am Not going to answer for Diehard, but I’ll give you my opinion on those three players situations.
Hamhuis was injured but came back to play three weeks before the deadline. He should been asked immediately when he came back about waving his ntc. Instead they dithered and farted around until the last minute and ended up having to keep him. I’m sure some of the mouth breathers on here will say but he was playing poorly blah blah blah. He had an excellent track record or great play before that half season and horrible injury, so that excuse holds no water at all. He was twice the player Kris Russel ever was. It was a fuck up by management plain and simple.
Edler was approached and didn’t want to waive. Not too much Elmer could do there. He could have applied pressure but I’m not sure that would have been a smart thing to do.
Tanev should have been dangled for the last two to three years. The team is a garbage fire with or without him. Trade him now for scraps for all I care. He’s always hurt so his value is the worst it’s been in six years. He should have been moved a few years ago. He only has a modified ntc
Hamhuis was a screw up, plain and simple. There was no reason that had to be left to the last minute like it was.
Tanev should have been traded but Jimbo was trying to serve 2 masters, rebuild and compete at the same time. Now his trade value is way down so I’m not sure what he’s worth. Hopefully he plays in the WC and rebuilds some value here before the draft. With Stecher, Schenn and Biega on the right side already, perhaps Jimbo can find a FA or trade partner to add on the right side so he can finally move Tanev.

I can't get excited arguing over 2nd and 3rd tier players, nor did the likes of Chicago and Pittsburgh when they were winning all of those Stanley Cups...
When you secure a group of elite players, and those 2 teams had not only quality, but they had quantity when it came to elite players, you can roll secondary players in and out of the organization and not miss a beat...
And when secondary players get to play with elite players, it can give a mirage that they are better than they really are so often teams get more for them in deals than in hindsight they should have...
I had a fun year and for the first time in a long time, I went to more games and gave away just a few of my season ticket holder seats so I'm already jacked about next year...
And its because of the core 4 which looks like it will climb to 5 if Demko continues to develop and Markstrom has another year like this one...
As for the secondary players, I don't expect too many of them to be around when the team is a serious contender again...
Take care...
