...at the stage this franchise is at both on the ice (poor) and in their front office (green) a couple of 2 million depth signings for 1 year to fill holes isn't the end of the world.

This dumpster fire is starting from square one.

They're not even a real team at this point with all their unknowns, silly contracts and inefficiencies....

Agreed Donny.

I'm indifferent on Cotter. I know next to nothing about him, but contrary to my response to Topper about him and Schenn not being available come September, upon a further (cursory) look at the player, I don't think he merited a signing on July 1st. He played a 55 games for Vegas the year they won the Cup, but he didn't play a single post-season game. The following season he played 76 games, and didn't dress at all in the playoffs. His minus-24 with NJ last season isn't screaming, "Sign me July 1st for $2+M!!!!"

A signing like Schenn falls in step relaying the foundation (dumpster fire square one). You're paying him more than $2M on July 1st for a several reasons.....

1. You have the cap space and don't expect to be competing for a playoff spot.
2. You want his experience and leadership qualities in the dressing room mentoring the youngsters.
3. He can probably play the 6 spot on the right-side all season on this team and not be a greater liability than a young defenseman who is better served playing the 2-4 spot in Abbotsford.
4. He will absolutely go to war with any opponent who elects to take a liberty with a youngster.
5. Another rebuilding team would have snapped him up for all of those reasons if the Canucks (who were rumoured to be his preferential locale) didn't offer him a spot.

I also can see him either signing another 1 year deal here next year, or transitioning into a player development role with the Canucks.

In a rationale world, your assessment metric is bang on.

However, Because of the month-long madness of GM’s (league-wide) beginning on July 1st, the remaining available players on September 1st is akin to promoting a player from the ECHL.
And Schenn and Cotter are what?

Values that are subject to marketplace craze.

I think outlined what I see Schenn’s worth to the team as in a post above.

I also adjusted my position on Cotter in that one.

*New garbage

It's like when you toss a bunch of Dollar Store and More junk into the bin then quickly rip over to Dollorama and fill a bag
If you need air...call it in

Garbage in is exactly what we want (for now). Even better if they're recyclable for change at the Return-It Depot like the garbage out.

Getting a first and a third for Meaty and Hoglander and replacing them with Gallagher and Oleksiak who may be trade able for more picks this year or next is a tidy piece of work. I approve.

He’s not wrong. Both guys know what they’re in for and what their job will be here. Management gets draft capital it can either use to add young talent while in contention, or ass trade capital to add those pierces to take them into contention.

Not a bad bit of low-key work. Helps when expectations are managed.

Now, about that Dickless Swede…

Would've been ecstatic with a 2nd.

Protected in 2030, not so in 31. Long shot but there's a hopers chance it could turn out to be a lottery 1OA.

Even a snowball's chance, who'da thunk it for Meaty?
