The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. Justin Trudeau opts for USMNT’s World Cup opener, not Canada’s

On a day that Canada and the United States both opened their campaigns at the FIFA World Cup, Justin Trudeau opted to watch Team USA.

Trudeau, the 54-year-old former prime minister of Canada, was in attendance for the U.S.’s game against Paraguay in Inglewood, Calif. on Friday night. He was not there to watch Canada battle back to earn a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto earlier in the day.

The reason for his decision is obvious. Trudeau’s girlfriend is Katy Perry, and the 41-year-old pop star performed in the opening ceremony before the U.S.-Paraguay match.

During the first half, Trudeau and Perry were seen sitting together in one of the luxury suites at SoFi Stadium (called Los Angeles Stadium during the World Cup) as the Americans raced out to a 3-0 lead behind two goals from striker Folarin Balogun and a Paraguayan own goal. The U.S. went on to win the game, 4-1.

Canada’s game kicked off in Toronto at 3 p.m. ET, while the United States’ game started at 9 p.m. ET.

I made a dedicated Trudeau thread on another site a few years ago.

A tribute of sorts :)

Here is the current update on the approved projects coming out of Carney's Major Projects Office as of June, 2026 (Just the approvals since the MPO was initiated in August, 2025)

The End.

Stay tuned for future updates. As we are "building at speeds not seen in generations", updates are coming faster than you can imagine. As Ferris Bueller said ""Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.""

does canada have any major projects started since carney launched the major projects initiative?

What about:

Yes, Canada has launched and fast-tracked several major "nation-building" initiatives since Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced the Major Projects Office to streamline approvals and construction timelines. These developments focus heavily on the clean economy, mining, and trade corridors.Major projects selected for federal backing include:

Contrecœur Container Terminal: A major port expansion project at the Port of Montréal to expand existing capacity by 60%, which has broken ground and is set to become the largest eastern port expansion in Canadian history.

Ksi Lisims LNG: A nearly $30 billion liquefied natural gas facility in northwestern British Columbia, which aims to be one of the lowest-emission LNG operations in the world.

Alto High-Speed Rail: A proposed 1,000 km high-speed railway connecting Toronto to Québec City.

Darlington New Nuclear Project: Expansion of nuclear power capabilities in Ontario to incorporate small modular reactors.

Critical Minerals & Energy: Several large mining and electrical transmission projects, including Canada Nickel's Crawford Project in Ontario, the Matawinie graphite mine in Quebec, and an extensive power transmission expansion in northern British Columbia.

Or are you looking for things that happen faster because it is Canada after all....nobody slows down progress with red tape better than Canada and all the special interest groups that hinder and obstruct any and everything

Carney will buy out unsold Vancouver condos to bale out the developers in a falling market.

No, taxpayers are not getting market value. This is a bale out to keep the developers from losses.

Yes, but, have they been approved by the MPO, or, are these still pipe dreams (Alto Rail), or were they already in progress and the MPO just stepped in fromt of a project already in motion (stolen valour is the military term)?

The article I read said they're just reducing development charges (DCCs). Talk of buying unsold condos was hinted at.

So like the the special projects office, they are picking and choosing winners and losers.

They are rewarding the mismanagement of developers who thought buyers would cover these charges and Provincial and Municipal Governments who thought it prudent to introduce these charges.

What of people who did buy into these developments and purchased units in complexes that are suddenly government social housing?

Remember it was the Vancouver real estate developers who were very cosy to then Mayor Gregor who not runs the Federal Ministry Housing and Infrastructure.

All valid points except I don't think the plan is to provide social housing, but rather to buy the units outright and then sell them to the public with favorable financing terms. So I read that to mean they're subsidising the mortgages. You can call that social housing if you want but I always thought that referred to government subsidized rentals.

Interestingly, local governments have already reduced DCCs and now asking to be reimbursed by the federal government, lol. Who's to say whether the developers pass on any of these savings; why wouldn't they just keep selling at the market rate?

I'm generally not in favor of the government getting involved in private sector. They should stick to regulation. Offering these units on favorable terms will just increase demand. Seems self-defeating.

Are the charges being reduced, or is one level of government paying the charges of another government?

Recall the Federal Conservative initiative to provinces, cities and municipalities that they reduce development charges for housing in order to recieved Federal funding?

This is the Liberal answer where they control which housing projects get assistance.

Remember that government involvement in housing is nothing more than ballot box stuffing.
