If he makes it to the trade deadline without issue then there will be gamblers willing to throw in on his potential but not until then Id say

Who really thinks he can hold it together?
I think it was HW who posted on here the other day that Edmonton has been calling about him.
Jarry and their 2028 1st unprotected! By then they'll be knocking on the lottery door me thinks
I would actually go for thier 2029.. that could be a top 3 pick again.

In fact, I would LOVE to see RJ have that long view for gathering 1st round picks. no team wants to give up this or next years 1st and look bad in the draft lottery..

so we trade farther into the future for unprotected picks.

[edit] - I would like to add, I am ok not trading Demko and rolling with 3 goalies into the year. I would prefer this to giving away Tolopilo like we did Silvos

The problem with the Edmonton scenario is they have to unload cap to take on Demko. The rumour is Nurse is on the way out. I would not want Nurse. I also doubt Demko gets us a 1st at this point. Maybe with some retention??

If Thatcher is willing to go to Edmonton, then you let him pass his medical and his value goes up.

Ideally, the trade doesn't happen, Edmonton can't figure out their goaltending situation, which leaves them swimming middle of the pack next year, and Demko stays healthy until December with some world-beating play that drives his value up.

Then the Canucks trade Demko to the Oilers for Jarry and an unprotected 1st round pick. While I'm not sure anyone risks an unprotected 1RP on Demmer due to his historic lack of durability, taking Jarry of their hands drives the price up.

Demmer then plays like a champ for Edmonton until January and suddenly gets injured and the Oilers plummet down the standings leaving the Canucks with 2 lottery picks.

McDavid demands a trade.

Edmonton fans then weep bitterly as Katz and Bowman scramble to rebuild around Draisaitl who also wants out before the puck drops on 2027.

You mean our leading goal scorer over the past 2 years? I couldn't believe that one

He probably wants out more than the fans want him out. He arrived just as the implosion went down so his entire time in Van had been a disaster zone. Id went to get the fuck out too.

I really don’t blame Jake for wanting out. He admittedly got Rick-rolled by management, and should be somewhere else at his stage of career. Hope he lands a solid second - or first if he plays his cards right at the next trade deadline.

A few thoughts on a Demko trade (all provided he passes his medical and would prefer a chance to compete for a Cup before he's 34 years old).....

I would suspect that his destinations of choice would be West Coast, or possibly Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, Buffalo, and maybe Pittsburgh or Toronto.

He is from San Diego, so the West is an obvious reason.

His wife is from Michigan.....so if you look at teams in that area, it might pique his interest.

For the sake of post length, I'm gonna make several posts for each idea in hopes of generating discussion (cuz that's what Donny likes) that is a bit easier to weed through.

Los Angeles sounds like the easiest fit at a glance.

Kuemper and Forsberg (36 and 33 respectively) and neither of them had stellar seasons. Forsberg was better, but he's still not someone you are naming in your top-20 for goaltenders you want backstopping you in the playoffs. Both of them are on the final year of their contracts, and the Kings might look to do a retool on the fly.

My proposal here gets interesting and multi-faceted.

To LA: Demko + Pettersson + Lekkerimaki - ($21M)
To VAN: Kuemper + Byfield + Draft Pick (2nd round or higher) - ($11.5M)

Why they do it:

The Kings get a guy who, when healthy, is proven to be a top-5 goaltender and his contract is quite reasonable (and term-controlled) over the next 3 years for the calibre of player he can be.

They role the dice on Pettersson resetting in a change of scenery and they move on from Byfield who was a 2OA pick but appear to have plateaued the past 3 seasons as a 50 point 2C. The cap exchange here is a gamble, however even now EP40 is the better player, he definitely possesses a higher hockey IQ, and produces equal offensive production even in this funk that he's in. I do think LA stands a good chance to win this part of the trade in the long run as EP likely thrives in LA where it's high profile, his wife is happy to be there, and the media spotlight on hockey players is way less than what it is in a Canadian market.

They turn back the clock a few years (from the Kopitar era), and they add a 22 year old winger with top-6 scoring potential to a roster that has the 27th ranked prospect pool (according to The Athletic).

It's a gamble, and if it backfires it backfires. But they aren't gambling futures, just cap space at a time where that space is only projected to grow.

Why they don't do it: The gamble.

Why the Canucks do it:

The Canucks get a young center who still has a shot at becoming a regular top-6 guy, he's big, relatively mobile, and it is worth the dice role considering he only has 3 years left on his current term. His age is more aligned with the current direction of the team.

The Canucks move Demko out at a time when he has shown us that the likelihood of him being a healthy contributor to meaningful hockey is almost non-existent.....what I mean is that 4 years from now he's unlikely to be a top-5 goaltender that helps us push for the playoffs.

The Canucks move on from Pettersson and all the drama surrounding him.

They also gain another dart to throw at the draft board at the expense of a 22 year old winger who at this point is not worth keeping at the expense of a trade like this.

The Canucks gain a shitload of cap space that, if managed smartly, can be used going forward (over the next few seasons) to acquire draft capital in exchange for short-term cap dumps.

Demko scenario cont'd.....Anaheim

To ANA: Demko + M. Pettersson - $14M
To VAN: Dostal + McTavish + Gudas (rights) - $13.5M

Why Anaheim does it.....

They upgrade in the crease. The Ducks are pushing to be a team that is considered a bonafide threat for the Final-4, and their goaltender, Dostal, was average during the season and absolute shit in the playoffs.....a goaltender like Demko gives them a better shot against Vegas this year, maybe makes the difference and it was Anaheim facing off against the Avs instead.

The rumours that they want to move on from McTavish have been swirling for a while, and he's the key chip in bringing in a top goaltender.

Carlsson, Gudas, and Trouba, are all UFA, and it sounds like Carlsson is the one they want back from that veteran group.

They have a plethora of RS defenseman right now, and all of them young. They have a dearth on the left-side. Meaty fits the bill of a veteran left-shot blueliner who isn't breaking the bank in the current cap world, and can be counted on to play 4th-6th minutes in a decent system. He's mobile and he's stay-home, something they might need.

Why Anaheim doesn't.....

Demko is high risk/high reward. Dostal is medium risk/high reward.

Dostal is a better age fit for their current roster.

They want a top-6 forward in exchange for McTavish.

Why the Canucks do it.....

McTavish is a 2nd line centre with upside and he's young. It's a gamble that he develops into a JT Miller talent versus a floater who never quite gets there.

Why the Canucks don't.....

I can't think of a reason why they don't, which is also a reason why Anaheim probably doesn't either. :P

Demko scenario cont'd.....Utah

To UTA: Demko
To VAN: No idea

This one I am simply looking at cap space and crease situation in contrast to team expectations.

Utah is a playoff team and pushing to improve. Vejmelka doesn't look like he's going to be a top-10 goaltender, and his numbers don't wow anyone. He's the same age as Demko, so unless people are confident he's a late bloomer then Demko is an immediate upgrade for a team looking to make a dent in both the regular season and playoffs.

I can see Demko agreeing to go here based on location.

I don't know enough about the players on Utah to actually speculate much.....so again, this is a suggestion for the sake of discussion.

Demko scenario cont'd.....San Jose

To SJ: Demko + M. Pettersson
To VAN: Nedeljkovic + 2027 1st

Nedeljkovic is the same age as Demko but has not really come close to reaching his draft-day potential which was comparable to Ryan Miller and Cam Ward.....maybe close to Ward but without a ring. He played fewer games than his younger counterpart, Askarov, this season, but both of them posted lousy numbers for any sort of NHL starter on a winning team. I would bet that the Sharks were a wildcard team this year with a healthy Demko.

They own the 2OA pick this year, and are ready to take the next step. Demko in the crease for 3 seasons while 23 year-old Askaraov develops behind him could be very very beneficial for a young San Jose team.

Pettersson helps stabilize their blueline with a reasonable veteran presence.

I dunno.....again, more for discussion.

Demko scenario cont'd.....Detroit

This is an interesting one, and I'm not sure what it would look like. I think any sort of speculation here has to wait until Larkin's trade request is figured out. But here's a Wild one (see wot).....

To Detroit: Demko + EP40 + Faber - $24.6M
To Minnesota: Larkin + Willander + Dallass 2027 2nd RP + $3M of cap retention on Demko - $12.2M
To Vancouver: Seider or Edvinsson + Gibson + Detroit's 2027 1st RP + 2nd RP in 2028 + $1.5M of cap retention on Demko - $16.4M (assuming Edvinsson gets the same as Seider).

Why Detroit does it.....

They replace their outgoing 1C with EP40 and get a top goaltender to backstop them. Faber addresses the loss of Seider or Edvinsson.

Yzerman needs a win to keep his job, and he might give the cylinder a spin here.

Why Detroit doesn't.....

Gambling on Petey bouncing back and Demko staying healthy.....otherwise, frankly, they stand to make out like gangbusters here.

Why Minnesota does it.....

Minnesota finally gets a 1C, and they acquire a middle-pairing RHD who might develop into Faber's replacement and a 2nd round pick in a draft they don't have one in.

Guerin wants to keep Hughes, and Larkin and Hughes (both Michigan boys) go back with Hughes crediting Larkin as being a mentor and inspiration, and one of the reasons he chose to attend Michigan.

Why Minnesota doesn't.....

Cap retention (albeit only for 3 seasons) and Hughes will cost a shit ton more than Faber. But again, this trade makes sense for them if the cap works out (imeho).

Why Vancouver does it.....

The young players and the picks. The acquisition of cap space. Turning the page on Scooter Doodle.

Why Vancouver doesn't do it.....

Not really sure, but open to hearing thoughts.

Demko scenario cont'd.....Edmonton

Assuming he thinks the Oilers could be where he wins a Cup with McD and Draisaitl.....

To EDM: Demko + M. Pettersson - $14M
To PHI: Nurse + VAN 2nd (2027) - $9.25M
To:VAN: Jarry + Michkov + EDM 1st (2028) + EDM 2nd (2026 + 2027) - $1M
