At 1oa, we take McKenna. If it is 2 or 3, we should try to trade down I think. The next five players (Stenberg, Reid, Verhoeff, Malhotra, and Carels) seem to have a lot going for them as top of the lineup potentials, maybe can snag an extra pick

From most of the draft info I’ve seen, those are the top six picks. I wouldn’t want to not walk away with one of them, but Malhotra and Carels are a bit of a reach in the top three. If they could get another first rounder, dropping down from a top three to six OA would be fine by me.

If the Canucks get a top 2 pick, keep it. I can see trading down if they land at #3.

With respect to trading down, as with any theoretical trade option, it depends what's coming back.

While most of the top 5 are likely to be very nice pieces on any team, I am not convinced that any of them will be the centrepiece of the kind of multi-season contender that I am allowing myself to hope that the Canucks are trying to build.

I'm also not sure that any of them won't be a player like that; I'm just saying that I don't see a Crosby/MacKinnon/McDavid can't miss future Hall-of-Famer in the mix. McKenna could be that guy, but I don't think it's a lock.

So I would trade any of the first, second, or third OA that the Canucks could draw down to 4th or 5th OA, if the return also included a pick likely to wind up in the top 10 in 2027. Or a whatever overall first rounder in 2027, plus a who-can-see-that-far-into-the-future-anyway first rounder in 2028.

Yes, of course a move like that could easily bite you in the ass, but the Canucks have not stockpiled enough resources that they have a clear path to being a contender managing conservatively, so they need to take some calculated risks.

I don't see any GM making that trade, anyway, unless his scouting staff is a lot more sure of any of these young men than the scouts who publish their findings.

We are picking first.

We are selecting McKenna.

That's it.

That's all.

1st: 25.5% 2nd: 18.8% 3rd: 55.7%

A higher chance than a coin toss for 3rd pick.
More than luck is needed. But there's time to sacrifice 'til 5th of May. 👻

Does anyone remember where Topper or dbr's posts on draft success percentages are?
Been searching and having no luck.

This the key post, but there was some discussion before that you might also find interesting:

Draft lottery day is May 5th. Cinco de Mayo. And Taco Tuesday.

It should be a good day to suck back a few ICE cold Tecate and chew on some churos as we watch the 'Nucks slide to 3rd.

Mine was long ago and likely lost when the board upgraded.

Outside the top 1/2 of the 1st round, the crap shoot begins.
