The downside to this for Edmonton is that they cannot do much with this savings this coming season, and next year they will have to sacrifice futures in order to improve via trade, and then find UFA's who will sign on. They don't have much in the pipeline that will be stepping up to take advantage of the cap room with homegrown extensions.

The timing of this also isn't easy for them as the new playoff salary cap is in effect this season which will limit their ability to load-up at the deadline.
