Didn't watch but just catching up on the recap...
Looks like the Captain already bagged his second Norris
This Sherwood kid... I thought he was just a Clutterbuck and change. Watching some of his Canucks highlights showed me he is much more than just a heat-seeking missile. He not only has piss 'n vinegar and a high revving motor, but his offensive IQ is decent, especially off the rush. He can make a play either with a pass or a shot. Plus he drives hard to the net and agitates the opponent.
This is how CoHog should strive to play, but alas, I don't think he quite has the hockey brains. He's still waiting to wow the NHL with a Michigan.
Rats Scurry
Also, loved the setup by Vidal Sasson. How did he look? Seems like his game could translate better in a depth role than AHL Bains.

Benns hit on Carlo...2 minutes.

Hughes on Norris...5 and a game.

The NHL is a joke.
The refereeing (and subsequent video review) processes may be the worst in pro sports.
A shame.

By the rule book both should have been 5 and the game. Hughes was not a hard push or crosscheck. It was not vicious nor was there any intent imo. But if the boarding results in face/head into the boards AND results in an injury, it is an automatic 5 and a game, or so the rule says. Benn's hit looked much more intentional and resulted in a hit to the face/head and resulted in an injury. He should have been gone as well. Maybe the Canucks can ask for an explanation.donlever wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 9:19 am Benns hit on Carlo...2 minutes.

Per NHL rule 41.5, a boarding penalty resulting "in an injury to the face or head of opponent" is given an automatic game misconduct.

A few comments;
Inconsistency was the biggest gripe on the officiating. It wasn't one sided, it was just bad all around and is why the game got away from them. Give Brady an extra 2 for hunting down and fighting cancer and the end of game nonsense stops. Stuztle could have gotten an extra 2 for tackling CoHog into the end boards.
One hell of a PK after the Hughes major, and yes, that was the correct call at the time. Player in a vulnerable position, didn't reverse to catch Hughes by surprise. Hughes had plenty of opportunity to avoid making that cross check (as light as it may have been). Face first into the top edge of the boards from a point blank crosscheck to the numbers.
Amazing how well you can skate and balance when your knees aren't pinched together. I was screaming at the TV to shoot when Scooter dumped off the puck to P.M.P. 5030 for the goal.
Whats with the Canuck reject coaching staff? They should have been coaching Calgary the past few seasons for a real time warp. We know why NJ went with Keefe.
Tough PP without Hughes. Really shows how important he is in controlling the 1st unit. Scooter set up as a decoy with Garland/Hronek shooting from the opposite side is less than ideal even if Debrusk can get a tip in.
For all the sloppy shortcomings, was a fun game to watch.

Yeah...I can see Hughes as a 5 and a misconduct.
But then Benn s/b as well.
It is.
Or it isn't.
With those 2 examples it should not be that hard to be consistent with the calls game by game.
Why Hughes goes to review and is 5 and Benns does and is not is mind numbing.
Because Benn paid his penance by fighting Zadorov?
Anything is possible in this league.

Hughes must be Hella strong. He just wasn't in a position to exert a lot of force on that cross check. It looks more like a stumble in soccer when the defender pushes a hip down to break your stride.
2 for interference, or checking from behind. But it's not a 5er.
Good thing we won the game.

But it is 5 and a game. Any boarding call where the hit results in a head or facial injury is automatic. No discretion.Tciso wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 11:29 am Hughes must be Hella strong. Well I guess the only discretion might be in not calling it boarding. Not sure though.

I just don’t agree it was boarding. Also, if the hit causes an injury or not shouldn't be a factor.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 1:55 pmBut it is 5 and a game. Re: W-GDT: Canucks @ OTT - Nov 23 4pm - SNet
Was he injured? Or did he just skate off holding his mouth (for effect?) and come right back out?
It was a fluke penalty, with him hitting his face on edge of the boards. Hughes let up, and just gave him a little shove. In 95% of the time, it would be a harmless play. I always look at these from the "what if it was a Canuck that got hit?" perspective and think I would have initially been pissed - but wouldn't have expected a game misconduct for that hit. The major was enough.
OR...... Since Norris and Hughes are friends, it was all a ploy to get Hughes tossed to cover for his hangover
Onwards!
