The fucked up name change of the centrist BC Liberal Party to BC United. To distance themselves from the unaffiliated Federal Liberal Party they set up their tent on a soccer field. The BC United leader, Kevin Falcon is not likable and he has too many skeletons in his closet from his days in the BC Liberal government.

The other opposition party, the BC Conservatives, get popularity from their name as a word association, though no formal ties, with the Federal Conservative Party. Unfortunately the are a collection of far right conspiracy theorists and hard core religious right.

As the polls have come out over the past few months, the botched name change has lead to public fallout as the public pays little attention to Provincial politics. The reaction of many when polled has been, "I hate the NDP, who the hell is the BC United, Conservatives, yeah I hate Trudeau, I'll vote Conservative."

The United and the Conservatives completely fucked up a negotiated merger over the egos of their respective leaders. Former BC Liberal Premier said it best. in any merger, both leaders need to go and a new face has to come to the fore.

Meanwhile the NDP continues their Pivot Legal Society agenda in urban areas while divesting rural BC to to aboriginal and environmental groups. The resource sector is being killed through regulation and consultation. Aboriginals have been given control of old growth forest. The Mining Act for staking mineral claims is being rewritten by and aboriginal marine biologist with assistance from an aboriginals consulting firm. None have any experience in the mineral sector or mine finance sector.

Rent controls are limiting investment in rental housing, except low income rental housing built by the government. Why is our elected government going into the slum lord business?
+ 1.

Just unite the right and call it the PC party. And you are correct Falcon s not well liked. Christie would be an improvement over the last couple of dough heads they have had heading up that party. Hell I'd take Gordo or the Zalm back at this point. Stockwell Day? Move Melissa Lantsman across the country for all I care.

BC has been pushing rural cell and internet, however the rural community has to have a certain racial mix to qualify.

Not surprised, candidates fleeing the BC United (a soccer team for christs sake) to the Conservatives who win on name association with the Federal Party despite being a bunch of crack pots.

October is crack pipes vs crack pots.

I hope the crack pots win.

The Fraser Institute has announced it can no longer perform its annual School Performance Review as the data is is currently garbage. This is the first time since the reports began being published in 1998.

Reasons cited
Three significant changes have been introduced that weaken the results and usefulness of high school testing in BC:
  • The assessments no longer affect a student’s grade for the related course.
  • Students are not required to pass the assessment to graduate.
  • The assessments no longer test course-specific knowledge but rather broader concepts and ideas. Because of this, the tests are significantly less consequential for students.
In 2021/22, participation in the Grade 10 numeracy assessment was 22.3 percentage points lower than the 2015/16 Grade 10 Math exam; participation in the 2021/22 Grade 10 literacy assessment was 17.1 percentage points lower than the 2015/16 Grade 10 English exam; and participation in the 2021/22 Grade 12 literacy assessment was 14.2 percentage points lower than the 2015/16 Grade 12 English exam.

While writing these assessments is “mandatory” for graduation, fewer students are writing them, and BC’s graduation rate—96 percent—hasn’t plummeted.
While the Teacher's union and their NDP colleagues hated the tests and advised parents not to have their children take them over a misguided fear that it assessed individual teach performance and mistakenly said that socioeconomic factors were not included (they are). These studies were invaluable for assessing school performance over a range of years (no single year should be looked at in isolation). Improving or decreasing performance trends showed where schools needed to improve and allocate addition resources.

Now it is gone. So too are letter grades for all classes to grade 10 and long gone are the days of failing and holding back a child for not learning.

The private school my kids are in use a 5 tier review system instead of grades. I think the BC public system uses 4.

Extending - grasps and applies concepts and material at a level well above grade norm.
Applying - grasps and applies concepts easily.
Proficient - understands concepts and beginning to apply at expected level.
Developing - inconsistent grasp of concepts, no application.
Emerging - I don't recall the wording on this one, but basically it means you can see spot run but don't fully understand who spot is or why he's running.

They then have an effort/character evaluation that goes along with each subject that is considered to a subjective assessment by the teacher. What's comical is that the new grading system is also subjectively interpreted by the teacher.

There's a sick irony in the fact that the education system does not see the value of a grading rubric.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

My kids' school took down their provincial championship banners this year as the athletics program focus is now on keeping kids active, not on winning.

Can't you do both?

That wouldn't happen out here - they still celebrate 30-40 year old state championships. Have dinners, special nights at school games, etc. :D

Little on detail but plenty of big picture ideas in the Rusty/Peterson sit down conversation.

One of the things Rusty and PP miss in their resource driven come back plan is the Supreme Court.

As I previously noted, the BC Government is rewriting the claim staking laws of BC to comply with UNDRIP. There was a scheduled Zoom meeting for this afternoon among interested members of the public, The Minister, Deputy Minister, the staff and consultants working on the new laws to outline progress and concerns to date on the process.

Yesterday, less than 24 hours before the scheduled start, the meeting was cancelled by the NDP Government as they have decided to muzzle staff until after the election.

Rustad proposing a tax credit on home interest payments.

That is a tax policy that separates Canada from the US.

Interesting.

Make your mortgage payments tax deductable.

I have a feeling the NDP is getting back in. Somewhere UkCanuck is covered in porridge with his 18 yellow teeth teaching kids in Kandahar how to speak good commie English and weaving sweaters while having a crumpit
