If they can't upgrade defence I think they are hoping McWard is ready to start playing in the NHL.

I've heard that talk too recently but I just don't see it myself.

I think Woo is a closer but he isn't signed yet.

Picker of Cherries wrote: Thu Jun 20, 2024 5:05 am The team took a significant down turn last season when Joshua was injured. Maybe management has a plan to replace the grit this team seems to be losing, but Jake Guentzel as a smaller, not particularly fast sniper taking around nine million of cap space on the wrong side of the age chart seems like a bad idea to me. That signing would have more Barry Pederson type downside risk than up side. Pettersson has played best with Miller and Kuzmenko, guys that go to the net and score in tight. I’m not as certain as the media seems to be that Guentzel will work particularly well with Pettersson. Management should be looking for physical forwards with skill, guys that create a bit of havoc around the net, and score ugly goals, young Corey Perry types.
Okay, but who is available as a UFA?

Bertuzzi maybe? But he's not "young" anymore really.

When you say "a young Corey Perry" you are clearly talking trade, rather than UFA

... and that will cost assets.

Guentzel, believe it or not, is younger than most of the top potential forwards that might make it to UFA status.

And he is rumoured to be very interested in Vancouver, due to situation and the Pittsburgh connection.

A chance like this doesn't arise very often.

Yes, there's a good chance the contract could become an albatross in the latter years

... but there are ways to deal with that.

I say sign him and bring in the next Joshua(s) for Tocc to mold in his own image.

We need assholes AND we need offense.

$8M x 8.

The first 5 years will probably go well.

Then ship him off to Robidas Island. :mex:
That and offer an extra year for Myers, Zadorov and Blueger types.

Example:

Myers asking for $3mil per next 2, offer $7.5 over 3

Zadorov asking for $5 mil per next 5, offer $28mil over 6.

Something like that to bring down their cap hits.
Yes, I am a fan of this method.

I'd go even more extreme, going up to 8 years for the right player

... but that is the kind of thing each team should only do with a single player.

Or at least rich teams should do it, poor teams not so much.

Yep this is what I think will happen. Likely some negotiating on what the compensation will be behind closed doors, but the Canes lose leverage every day that goes by towards July 1 so I suspect if this does happen it will be mid/late next week. I'm not worried about 8 years, it's definitely too long but so much can and will change over that time so worry about it in 5-6 years.

Can't see signing Zadorov if the team is going after Guentzel as he's a luxury we can't afford. Lots of cheaper options who offer 80% of what Z does so no reason to overpay, let the leaves or some other team do that. I figure Blueger is back, likely on a 2-3 year term in the low $2 million range. Myers I'm wondering about now given what we're hearing in reports - perhaps they have their eyes on another big d-man that would be cheaper? There's a few available in the market this year that are younger and can do the same job, so perhaps they are putting the squeeze on Tyler.
Yes, there seems to be more than the usual number of this kind of D-mam available this year.

Can't see us re-signing Zads IF the rumours are true about how much he wants ($6M x 6).

I'll bet Myers returns at $3M-ish though.

Rumour has the Rangers willing to move Trouba and retain.

Mikeyhev for Trouba 3 million retained, let Zads walk, sign Meyers, sign Gunts.

Wouldja entertain it?

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

Trouba hates Canada but agree he would be treated like a king in Van if he came back north.

Maybe he could just hate Winterpig Canada and see the forest for the trees

Does he hate Canada?

Or did he just have issues with the way things went down in Winnipeg and wanted out of there?

No idea...you tell me.

JT and his American Woman seem fine here as we all know.

QH.

Thatcher.

Brock.

He'd fit RIGHT in.

Ain't gonna happen but thought I'd throw it out there after I read the rumour on the web.

I find it curious, if true, that Drury wants to move on from Trouba, their captain.

Seems like a red flag.

I can imagine Winnipeg not warming the hearts of all drafted there. That said, he would feel at home with all the Americans on the team.

One mans red flag is another mans savior.

What could Gonch and Foote do with Jacob considering what they've accomplished with Meyers?
