Cherry Picker wrote: Thu Oct 15, 2020 8:51 am No this is old news. With the lack of revenue the new CBA agreement has a 20% escrow this season (down to 6% in later years). On top of that there is a 10% additional hold back this season that the players could get back in later years if the revenue improves enough, but it probably won’t so practically the players lose 30% this season off the top of their salaries. It would reduce the cash paid out to Eriksson, but it won’t affect his cap hit. A non-cap team would be more likely to take his salary because the payout is lower, but I think if they were able to find a taker for Eriksson’s salary, it would have been done already. I think Benning was choked not having early round draft picks this season. He seems not very willing to add picks or good prospects out to move Eriksson. He might put Loui in Utica and save a bit over a million on the cap, but moving his whole cap hit to another team seems very unlikely at this point.
I'd actually missed that extra 10% bonus escrow - so imagine you're Loui, you've cashed the $3mil cheque in July...now your $1 mil salary is down to $700k. Are you going to ride the buses in Utica for 6 months for $700k?

Maybe that's the real reason Loui wasn't moved - Benning has a deal to let Loui compete in camp, and if he's demoted then Loui will pack it in. If he retires before the season starts, I'm pretty sure the whole cap hit goes away.
Luoi will still get his 6 mill in the minors though. The canucks gain the 1 mill in cap space thats all

OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today that the team has signed forward Evgenii Dadonov to a three-year contract. The contract holds an average annual value of $5M and will see Dadonov earn $3.5M in 2020-21, $5M in 2021-22 and $6.5M in 2022-23.

This is a smart contract for the times.

I would not expect a trade for Louise until closer to season start. There is still too many variables to the season.. start date, format, games, etc.

When there is more clarity, I would expect a move then. I don’t doubt the calls have been made, but right now most owners are probably looking at it like there is plenty of time to get to cap floor later, and a short time to to see if the season is cancelled (we keep paying the air thief)

I was hearing about other aspects about impact on salary just never heard the direct % of a straight reduction. Then I also wonder about only playing 40 - 60 games and how that will also impact the actual salaries of the players.

Well I guess we will see.

Plus i really wanted to be the first.

Size for what? He's not a checking line player. "Size" is used for scorers as a proxy for their play in the paint. But guys like him and Pavelski who aren't big score almost all their goals like they are big men, and they are absolutely elite at it. (JoPa's older, of course).

I agree that 6 years is a little risky for a player who makes their living getting hacked, but that's true regardless of size. Pavelski's a comp who made it at least until age 35. He's 36 now; last year was a down season but then he was money in the playoffs).

Careful there Curmey.. by Correcting Gomer on his bullshit, you might be starting an "EPIC" battle...
Battle? Epic as in Joe Kapp-Angelo Mosca epic?

With Gallagher, I like him as a player but I think the Canucks need to add a little size plus I'm not so sure he can continue to play that style for another 6 years without incurring a lot more injury as he gets older.
He punches waaaay above his weight class and is a warrior but you nailed it with his style leading to more injuries down the road.

Its all out the window anyways with todays commitment
Yes, I think they dodged one but who knows whether the rumoured interest was even valid. Plus they have Hoglander coming and I'd rather see if he can be a younger, cheaper, nastier option for that size range.
I bet this rumoured interest was another story that Mickey broke.....has to be true then, no?
He must really get around.

I kind of like what Toffoli brought, he's not the biggest guy but he doesn't get knocked around much and can also finish from in tight. I think that type and size of player was a good fit. I don't know about the Pavelski comparison, he's actually closer in size to Toffoli and while he's effective playing in tight, he doesn't seem as reckless about leaving himself vulnerable to physical punishment as Gallagher is. Regardless of all that, the money alone makes it something to stay away from.

OMG, RIGHT?!?? I said this at the end of the season last year!! You make him clear waivers every 90days or so (maximize the opportunity for some other team to take him for nothing, all the while sending the message of your disrespected the contract you signed, so we are disrespecting you) and then from Utica, send him down another league to have him set the record for the highest paid player in the ECHL!!

.... but in hindsight, I think someone (prolly Doc?) corrected me and mentioned that a guy with an NHL contract couldn’t play in the ECHL, and the Utica slinky treatment was the worst we could do.. or something like that..

You would think that retaining say 2 of the 6 would've been an option but with everybody squeezing nickels right now it ends up being the perfect shiticane.

Now with this chatter from the Vegas owner about how their time might not survive without ticket sales next year...I'm now thinking of how much 21/22 will get shortened. No way do they do 82 games. Do they even manage 41 games? Then a play-in round?

If they all need fans in the seats, maybe they don't even start by January. Maybe its March-May regular season, June-mid-August playoffs?

And if that's the case ... I'm especially opposed to paying anything to move a contract in this climate. Sure, the team's depth might be nerfed for the upcoming season, but its barely going to be a season anyway.

CapFriendly @CapFriendly
Calgary #Flames have signed F Andrew Mangiapane
2 year / $2,425,000 deal

2020-21: $2,400,000
2021-22: $2,450,000

Mangiapane had filed for arbitration and was scheduled to go before an arbitrator on Oct 20.
Stats;. Link .^^
Roughly the same age, opposite wing but Virtanen has done more even with the attitude questions marks. Getting Jake signed to a resonable
deal means we can keep working with him and finally get him to top six status "OR", sign and trade as I think JV may be more coveted then
the local media and some of the fans think.

Definitely comparable, but Mangiapane is more consistent over his shorter career

Heres a decent edmonton sun article about our division and where teams sit now the dust has settled

2. VANCOUVER CANUCKS
(Last year: 78 points. Third in the Pacific)
This is a gritty, hard-working team team stocked with young skill. They took a big step forward last season, eliminating St. Louis in the first round of the playoffs and pushing Vegas to a seventh game in the second. Those are legitimate accomplishments that suggest this is a team on the rise.

They were hit hard by free agency losses, though, with goaltender Jacob Markstrom and second pairing defenceman Chris Tanev moving to rival Calgary (ouch). On top of that, third pairing defenceman Troy Stecher signed in Detroit forward Tyler Toffoli moved on to Montreal after a brief but successful stopover in Vancouver.

Those are some significant losses, but GM Jim Benning worked quickly to fill the holes. Defenceman Nate Schmidt fell into their laps when Vegas needed to clear cap space for Pietrangelo, and actually represents an upgrade on Tanev.

In goal, the Canucks made a calculated risk in letting Markstrom go. Thatcher Demko was brilliant in four playoffs games (.985 save percentage), but is untested over the long haul. Signing former Washington Capital Braden Holtby adds another layer of insurance.

The pieces are falling into place across the board, with a blue line that features a gifted young puck moving defenceman in Quinn Hughes, a big veteran in Tyler Myers, perennial 30-point man Alex Edler and now Schmidt.

Their crop of forwards led by J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson, Bo Horvat, Brock Boeser and Tanner Pearson aren’t just talented, they’ve shown they can compete in the playoffs.

If the goaltending holds out, they edge out the Oilers and Flames for second.
