The Brexit disaster

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

And so it begins:

Makes total sense.
Japan has a free trade agreement with the EU.
Britain, in a no deal scenario, does not.
So why would a Japanese company produce cars for the European market in Britain?

I really would like to know what did they expect?

In a day and age where trade agreement are important, except in Donald Duck's mind, what did Britain expect to happen? Did they think that business would go on as normal without a proper agreement is in place.

Many brexiteers seem to claim "it's not about economics, it's about independence".
But once the economic realities hit home they may start to regret shooting themselves in the foot.

So, a picture drawn by what seems to be a flat earther? Yeah, they usually have their facts straight!

And what's with the Pakistani flag? Seems pretty random.

The Brexit boat should also show four hog-tied prisoners; Scotland, Northern Ireland, Gibraltar and London all voted to remain and are being abducted against their will. :|

Edit: "Garrison's name and identity are often linked to white supremacy and anti-Semitism" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Garrison
OK. Makes sense. The cartoon does look rather racist, what with the Pakistanis (Sikhs?) taking over the ship and all.

I also don't quite get the debt anchor.

The EU itself does not issue bonds or have public debt, it is financed by the member states. And looking at the members, the average debt to gdp ratio of the EU is 80%, which is slightly lower than the 86% of the UK and much lower than the 105% of Garrisson's native USA.

Just does not make sense. :|

The financial sector in London may lose 75,000 jobs and £10 billion/year in tax revenue as a result of Brexit. :|

And of course, the financial sector is but a drop in the English Channel...

As a proud modern-day “progressive” Perv feels he must see racism everywhere.

But hey, the way he cares about the fortunes of the UK is so cute!

Don’t cry Perv, everything will be just fine…

So you're saying Brexit is about Muslims?
That's a novel approach. :|

Probably also won't work very well, because I have heard it argued by Brexiteers that they will address a shrinking workforce, due to East Europeans no longer having free entry, with getting more people from the commonwealth.

From what I understand there are a lot more Muslims in the commonwealth (eg Bangladesh and Pakistan) than in Europe.

I realize that people with a frail ego often think name calling and ad hominem attacks somehow empower them, and can even be used instead of sound arguments, so I won't hold it against you. I just thought more of you. My bad.

Yet I do find the choice "perv" rather an amusing choice of insult from someone who calls himself "strange love".

Mazel Tov, doc. I hope you will soon feel better again. :drink:

As for caring about the UK; yeah, I have friends there, who worry about what will come.

Also, as a EU citizen, I am concerned that as the UK shoots themselves in the head, there will be splatter on our shirts... :(

The UK is Sweden's sixth biggest trading partner, accounting for some 6.2% of our exports, or EUR 8 billion. Almost as much as we export to Denmark, the US or Finland (EUR 9 billion each). Go into any British pub, and you will find a plethora of Swedish fruit flavoured cider. Now, one of the main culprits behind that affront, Kopparberg, has already bought a brewery in England so that they can move some production there, so they are prepared. But other companies may see a drop in sales.

There are also more than 100,000 Swedes living in London alone. What happens to them in a no deal brexit is still up in the air.
Not to mention that flights to and from the UK will suddenly no longer be covered by EU regulations, which means they must all be renegotiated which could take months if not years, making travel to and from the UK quite complicated. And I don't mind taking the odd trip to London.

As I said, they are doing the worst damage to themselves, but we're in the splatter zone.
