Would the Leaves be much worse off with Laine? It's been said countless times that it's not about finishing dead last and trying to lose, it's about stockpiling assets for the future. That the team is terrible just naturally leads to a higher draft position, but as important are the extra 2nd/3rd/4th round picks. If we'd been following this strategy, we might not have a Sutter or a Gudbranson (oh no!) but we'd have 8-10 more prospects in the system right now. Having those assets already in the organization comes in handy when you finally do get your McDavid/Matthews/Laine at the draft.

With our current mandate, the coach is forced to minimize mistakes, which lesses the amount of leash available to the younger players, further pissing off the fans that want some excitement. If Benning and co. were honest and said we were going to be a boring-ass hockey team with no margin for error, that needs to rely on luck and on goaltending to maybe win enough games to be within a sniff of the playoffs, you'd be hard pressed to find many folks signing up for tickets. Yet that's what we have.
Thus my smiley about Buffalo having to settle for Eichel and the Jets having to settle for Laine
The only HW the Canucks need

It's funny how a thread about the current GM gets derailed once again by a guy snivelling about the former GM.

What you seem to be not taking into consideration is that the players Benning might have had to flip for extra 2/3/4th round picks were not wanted or tradable, most would have cleared waivers.

It has taken 3 years just to get to the point where we have a Hansen or a tanev to bring to the table without getting laughed out of the conversation.
What a crock of shit. Bieksa, Garrison, Hamhuis , Richardson , Mathias had no value. Burrows ? Edler ? Stick to the politics , you're out of your element

Jason Garrison - 1 goal, 5 assists in 49 games a minus 12
Luca Sbisa - 2 goals, 10 assists in 52 games a plus 7

The 6 year, $27.5 million NTC contract that Gillis gave Garrison ends after next season, with a $4.6 million cap hit next year.
Sbisa's 3 year, $10.8 million NO NTC contract ends after next season as well, and will have a 3.6 million cap hit next year

Matthias, Richardson

Old man Bieksa, lit up by Ferland

Dude all the players I listed were marketable anywhere from a 1st to a 4th or prospects. It was a response to ukcanuck spewing his drivel about how Vancouver had no tradeable assets for picks and prospects until now. He was wrong. Every single player I listed and I'm sure some others as well had decent value. Bieksa and Garrison did in fact fetch second rounders each, but then Elmer puked those picks away.

Saved a ton of dough and misery for not having to watch the softie - Jason "Mr. Relaxation" Garrison and his useless big booming shot from the point.

The Bieksa 2nd helped us land Sutter and and a 3rd round pick and saved us from not having to watch Mr. Useless in the Calgary Flames Playoffs - Bonino. Clendenning, who the fuck cares! The Shrunkcarrot sized (In Blobbees wheelhouse of non-acceptable sizes) Forsling has 3 goals, 2 assists in 35 games in the NHL, whoopdiedoooooooo

Sutter - 14 goals, 12 assists
Bonino on the high flying Penguins - 8 goals, 13 assists.

Canucks drafted Lockwood with the 3rd pick the Pens gave us at 64th overall. GREAT LOOKING PROSPECT BTW and the Pens drafted goalie Gustavsson 55th overall in the 2nd, the pick we gave them

Canucks should not be trading extra picks for helping other teams out of cap hell

Huh? Benning has acquired lots of picks in his time here. He just seems to send them out the door as fast as he acquires them.

He's acquired 9 draft picks since showing up. He's traded away 12.

Traded Picks - 12

7th round pick along with Garrison to Tampa - If that's what it takes to get rid of Big Boom Shot, then good riddance.
2nd rounder for Gudbranson - LOVE IT!
4th rounder for Gudbranson - LOVE IT!
5th for Prust - Thank You Montreal for relieving us of a Coke Head AHL'er Drunk that Gillis traded for with our 10th overall pick
2nd rounder to help get Sutter - LOVE IT!
3rd rounder for Dorsett - Getting good services out of him despite injury this season
3rd rounder to help unload Kesler and get Luca "More Goals, More Assists than Garrison" Sbisa and Bonino. LOVE IT!
3rd round pick for Pedan as well as relieving us of the AMAZING GILLIS 2nd rounder - Mallet. This one is not over yet
2nd round pick for Sven Baertschi - WINNNNN!
7th for some decent services of Etem - Nice
5th for Larsson - Whooopdie dooooo. Decent services. How often do you get decent services from a 5th round pick?
2nd round pick for Vey - Ya win some, ya lose some. He did this for his coach. Not uncommon

Acquired Picks (counting 9)

2nd round pick for Garrison - BRILLIANCE!
1st round pick for Kesler - BRILLIANCE! Hello Gudbranson!
3rd round pick for Kesler - BRILLIANCE!
3rd round pick for Lack - BRILLIANCE! Hello Brisebios
7th round pick for Lack - BRILLIANCE! Eddie "only 4 games played this season" Lack

aaahhh, a 7th round pick. Devastating. At least we got rid of Jason "1 goal, 5 assists, minus 12, $4.6 million cap hit"

I will edit it on to my list above
