Meaty's wasn't the best execution, but it was a good plan. A big part of the reason Rypien won fights against bigger players was that he had both the skill and the inclination (surprisingly rare in hockey fighters) to...ahem... block shots.

If memory serves, Rypien was also a southpaw. That alone was something that your average hockey goon was unprepared for. When you’re a typical thug you usually use your left arm and grab the opponents jersey….then both just swing away with rights trying to reach over each others outstretched grasping lefts. The only real pathway for blows to land is over the top.

Now you’ve got a guy giving you his right arm and blocking with his left. Then, after you’ve exhausted yourself chucking overhand bombs, the arm he’s using to block suddenly starts speed bagging your chin from the inside.

Was a thing of beauty to watch as a Canucks fan.
