Yah, that 08/09 team deserved a better fate. There was a big drop off after the top 6 though. AV maybe could have moved a couple guys around to spread out the depth/talent. That D core was pretty solid as well, but as much as I liked SOB, he may have been a weak link.

I think the depth was decent for a cap era team.

That team was strange. Very disappointing until the All Star break, IIRC, and then they absolutely took off. It was a bit after Sundin joined the team, but the turnaround seemed to have a less to do with Sundin's play than the elevated play from the rest of the group. And I suppose that could have been, in part, because it was more difficult to load up on the first line.

While the WCE era was over, the playoff fragility remained. My recollection is that they were outplaying the Blackhawks, up 2-1 in the series and then gave up a late goal to allow Game 4 to go into overtime (which the Blackhawks won). They were out of sorts in the two games that followed -- less falling into a shell and more like too much hero hockey leading to blown coverages and prime scoring chances against, with often reliable players like Mitchell making some terrible plays and Loungo not coming up with the big save.

You'll have to forgive me UW, I can't tell by your wording if you are attributing the elevated play from the rest of the group to Sundin's leadership and effect when he joined the team, or if they are exclusive statements within the same sentence.

While Sundin's play was nothing spectacular in and of itself, if memory serves correctly, Kesler commented that Sundin was instrumental in his development as a player.

I was thinking that there this one one of those things where correlation didn't mean causation, but I wasn't even considering leadership when I wrote it. That could be right. It was a young group, and Sundin was a true heavyweight. Both mythically and corporeally (by the time he got to Vancouver....)

At minimum half the reason Gillis signed him imo.
