Yeah, I lol' @ Gen X too
I think 80% of us here are Gen X with a couple of Boomers?
Glad old man yelling at clouds BCE started this English Speaker's Corner. I'm sure I've pronounced some of these common words like an unedoocated punk.
Btw, I'm fairly certain "axed" is Ebonics. I heard this years ago.

Well the saving grace for me is that I don't eat much beef, so I have a dab of HP sauce maybe twice a month - hardly an amount that is going to make a difference. Also, remember, I'm old and in a few more years, I won't give a shit about what I eat or drink
Also, I have no idea what a gen X is (age group that is). All I know is that I'm solidly in the Boomer camp

Haven't tried that yet, but I will next time we have smokies or burgers at home (usually only once a month or so).Cousin Strawberry wrote: ↑Mon Nov 02, 2026 9:59 pm BCXP try dipping your snags and bangers into HP sauce. I put that shit on my smash burgers too

Wel, a lot of Americans prefer wadah to water, so the d instead of t thing has history.
But I guess Canadians are somewhere inbetween British and American English, eh?

Re: CC Random thread
There are enough regional variations in all 3 places that I'd be reluctant to make that generalization with respect to pronunciation. The only relationship that is clear to me is that a Newfie is a variant on an Irish one. The Canadian accent is considered quite neutral and is the target for U.S. newscasters who want a national audience. We usually choose the pronunciation that requires the least effort, so it's sort of the "ground energy state" towards which others trend.
I would agree about between British and American with respect to spelling.

Yeah, when I lived in the UK I became acutely aware of my pronunciation of "t"s as "d"s. I remember consciously saying "water" with a hard T so is not to sound too provincial lol.

Re: CC Random thread
We as Canadians are so used to pronouncing the 't' with 'd' that we don't even notice it anymore... we say 'boddled wadder'.
Might be a class thing in the UK where the well-to-do might still pronounce the 't'... 'wot-ah', but all I hear from Brits is 'wo(t)-ah'... tea is still popular but not the 't' in the liquid used to brew it with.

Yeah, definitely a class thing among the British. As a foreigner though, surrounded by different accents, you tend to adapt to the proper English. Would feel weird leaving the d silent.
