The only way the trade makes sense is if management gets Barzal and Petey vice Barzal for Petey - unless management is desperate just to get out from Petey's contract. No indications that they're there at this point. By all indications, it seems management wants to support Petey, not replace him.

Where do you sacrifice salary to have Petey and a 2C right now? A guy like Barzal is still a 1C, just not one that cracks the league's top-10 at the position.

Consensus was that there is no real trade talk regarding Pettersson because there is nobody who would take him right now.....the team would be paying to make that happen. The Canucks are opting to be supportive because their only hope in this current situation is for him to get out of the funk he's in and get back to being an 82+ point 1C. At that point they would have some options.

They also talked about how him returning to pre-2024 Petey is also the only way they can have a team that they could possibly sell Hughes on sticking with.

Paying to move him means Hughes leaves. Having him stay the way he is probably means Hughes leaves. Him returning to form gives them some hope.
