Happy with the signings of Garland, Demko and Boeser. It’s a positive sign seeing 3 Americans with solid character re-upping here on their retirement contracts. The Center ice position will have to be work in project, I gather.

So the only change is Kane and no drama?

And hoping like hell the EP returns to form.

HW the Boeser Hater, will not be happy about this.
I am not unhappy with this but I think you know that. The cap is good, the term a year or 2 longer than I would like. There had been rumours he had been offer 8+ for 5 years. That had me worried. His cap is right where it should be and perhaps a haircut of a hometown discount. But the Canucks had to move on term and they did. Lets see what the trade protection looks like in the last 2-3 years of his contract.

Ya, no room to upgrade at centre without moving cap out. But we have until the start of the season to be cap compliant.

This has been the best draft/free agency for this club since we drafted the twins.

Some good picks and no stupid contracts (so far).
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it

I would say the main goal for this season is not so much addressing “positional” need but more so on “fixing” the culture of a room that just freshly came off of what may go down as the most dysfunctional season on record. I like the people they have in place, returned and brought in.

IMHO, the culprits of that toxic culture may have been none other than JT Miller and Rick Tocchet.

You started to wonder about JT when the newly aquired players from Pittsburg extended so quickly in spite of how the market was being portrayed by the media and some fans....

It's not just that the players who resigned today are American, they quality individuals......

Take care...

I have some ambivalence about running back something that didn't work, but I also have the sense that all of these extensions and signings are a vote of confidence -- almost like, we all went through *that*, and we believe in who remains. If the players see their teammates as brothers itching to win a war after losing a battle, it very well could be a group with extra jump.

Been hearing a lot over the past couple months how many players don't want to come here or have Van in their NT lists. It's just not a desirable location for whatever reasons. Here are three guys who are showing otherwise, and who we all know are good guys and great people. It's good to see our boys say fuck it, grass could be greener on the other side but Van is my home and I want to be here to help this team win. I hope we see a repeat next summer with another one of our solid character Americans. This show of loyalty can only help convince him.

As for the numbers I don't like Demmer's AAV and Brock's term, but we all know there's always going to be additional costs when acquiring/re-upping free agents. The rising Cap is a massive help. As for NMCs, nothing is ever written in stone. If thing's go belly up, even for pennies on the dollar you can always move players. We managed move JTM and get a decent return to boot.

Are we a better team? Probably not when last year wasn't good enough and we didn't add anything significant. That said, Demmer's health alone could be a big difference maker. That and there should be enough upside from just the team being healthy and can benefit from a completely fresh start. So much of the negative drama should be gone. There's also Petey's return to form, which is a major X-factor that I have no idea how to bet on. It's almost like a bonus now if he can just be marginally better.

Patrick Allvin just said, “Adam [Foote] felt very confident starting the season with Petey and Chytil as the number one and two centres. We have a couple of younger centres, Raty, Sasson, and Mueller that are playing really well in Abbotsford and deserve a chance, too.”

So there’s the centre ice plan for next season - likely with Blugers and Aman in the 4th line mix.

I suspect as the season goes on they’ll look for upgrades, but the roster might be set for the summer - vacation time for management until opportunity knocks.

Roster looks great in net if healthy, and on defence, and wings look solid, just the one hole at centre to focus on, but that might be a long term project maybe TDL fix.

This yank’s perspective is that Vancouver is a great city, and I think that’s a commonly shared view among Americans who have visited. But it is expensive. And the organization is a bit of a shit show, isn’t it? And the media is full of arrogant pearl clutching retards. Point is, there are reasons beyond the place (the city, the province, the country) that has some players (Americans and otherwise) not wanting to go there.

All of these moves are fine.

Demko is getting fair market value, and I like that the term is only 3 years. Demko has one more year remaining on his current contract, and frankly, if he misses a ton of games due to injury over the next two seasons, then the Canucks can buy him out and, assuming I calculated this correctly, eat $2.83M for 4 years and move on. In an increasing cap world both the cap hit and the buyout hit are acceptable.

Garland is fair market value. He is a 50 point winger that can play anywhere in the top-9 and be effective. I think the term is a year too long, but oh well.

I've always been a fan of Boeser. I like that he's staying, and I think it would bee cool if he finished his career in Vancouver.....hopefully with a ring on his finger. Cap hit is fair, term may be a year too long, but that's fine. Develop from within and you have production that replaces his in decline at a salary that offsets.

Kane is a a necessary injection of berserking asshole. So long as off-ice antics and the poisonous Vancouver media don't conspire to submarine him, I think he's a good addition to the top-6.....hopefully he earns an extension.

None of these things put us over the top and back into contention status. The hole in the middle of our top-6 has not been addressed. As UW says, we're running back something that didn't work.....we can only hope that the main problem was off-ice distractions and that we're the same team that took Edmonton to 7 in the second round last year, albeit with a much better blueline at the expense of shallower top-6 depth.

How far the franchise goes with this current roster hinges massively on which version of Scooter shows up next season.

Pettersson is now the scrawniest Swedish lynch pin the NHL has ever seen.

Well what the fuck is he supposed to say? "Adam felt like we would be up shit creek without a paddle starting the season with Perimettersson and Filip Glass-noggin as the number one and two centres."
