Well the economic powers are already forecasting further doom and gloom for Canada due to Carney’s economic plans.

Removal of the GST on new houses for first time buyers…..sounds great, until you realize that it will only drive demand in that buyer demographic and exacerbate the existing problem of limited supply. Cool, you want to buy this house that was selling for $1M? Good news is that the $50K GST add-on is gone…..bad news is that now there are more people who want to buy it so the price has gone up to $1.2M because, well, you know…..supply and demand.

Canada has avoided the “recession” tag because we haven’t seen total GDP shrink in two consecutive quarters…..but the per capita GDP has been steadily trending downwards because of Liberal immigration policies. CIBC head labeled it a “per capita recession” and called a spade a spade. While this is not in Carney, because he literally just took his seat, his early decisions in this area will be telling.

Fitch if warning that Canada’s AA+ credit rating could take a hit if Canada proceeds with Carney’s spending platforms.

Oh, and Trump is saying good things about Carney, the latter is apparently warming up to the PoTUS despite peddling fear and disinformation about his campaign opponent’s alleged admiration for the Orange Man. In fact, Cornuck’s favourite Oval Office dweller went so far as to say, “ We’re going to have a great relationship.” and, “They both hated Trump, and it was the one that hated Trump, I think, the least that won. I actually think the Conservative hated me much more than the so-called Liberal.”

One of the earliest decisions by Carney is to limit government spending growth to 2% annually. Lower than inflation. So far so good.

Isn't this a good thing for our Prime Minister to build a great relationship with our southern neighbour - while still maintaining that we will never be the 51st state etc? I would think the laws of supply and demand would cause the $1M house to increase in price to $1.05M as at that level it would attract the same number of buyers as before (supply demand equilibrium).

So removing the GST just benefits sellers at the expense of government revenues (under the Conservative proposal).

The Liberal proposal was to give the GST relief only to first-time buyers, giving them a leg up on existing homeowners.

Poilievre announced his policy 5 days after the Libs (copycat?) but expanded it to all buyers, rendering it ineffectual.

I think that the removal of GST for first time buyers adds them to the mix of buyers (new or previous homeowners) who were going to purchase regardless of GST. More buyers means higher prices. I think that will be self-correcting as the first time buyers will then drop out as the price goes up out of their range. It will also chase those away who don't qualify or want to spend at the market driven increase. Then prices will drop again, so in the long-term it probably helps.....particularly if this removal of GST stays in place for first time buyers as the promised new houses start to get built.

In the short-term I don't know that it does anything.....certainly it wouldn't have been useful to cut the GST on all homes.

It's also worth pointing out that this only applies to new builds.
