Painfully listening to the translated Liberal debate. Four folks generally agreeing with each other. The only dissent on a couple of items comes from Bayliss. He took a stand against Quebec constitution measures, all others waffled without saying anything.
Spend more, don't cut transfer payments, don't raise taxes ... but we will pull a rabbit from the hat, increase productivity, increase the Canadian $ that will pay for everything.
All support and hail Trudeau's climate action and will proceed with it. Kill hydro carbons, until it comes to exporting oil from Alberta. All want energy east pipeline and will lever Quebec to get it done.
No word where any money is coming from, but all have plans they won't discuss.
Question on when an election would be called, Carney gets taken to task, why would Trump negotiate with you when you don't even have a seat in the House? Freeland runs with it. Good humour.
It was all sadly laughable but all to predictable.
Trump was mentioned in every answer to all questions. A bit on the Conservatives but far less than I expected.
The real winner was the Bloc.

I'm not watching but the chatter online is calling it a coronation for Carney.Topper wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 7:01 pm Painfully listening to the translated Liberal debate. $20B over the last three years is what I understand.
That's less than 1.5% of our annual budget. I'm okay with that

Re: Just Not ready
Carney was wooden and apparently his French was the weakest. He blew it on Hamas, "We will agree with Hamas" instead of "on Hamas".... he simply misspoke, but it will be run with.Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 7:09 pmI'm not watching but the chatter online is calling it a coronation for Carney.Topper wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 7:01 pm Painfully listening to the translated Liberal debate. He kept promoting his resume but was countered on it by Freeland, "I have already negotiated with Trump", Bayliss, "I've run international businesses and negotiated deals globally." No one seemed to be impressed.
He went full on his resume on the environment and climate issues. Full on Green.

Gould should run for the NDP leadership as she is far more openly tax and spend than test.

Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2025 5:08 pm The war could be over in a few weeks. This smacks to me of shoveling money out the door at the last minute. And there isn't much in the way of guns and ammunition left in Western stockpiles to send over, With the deindustrialization and the financialization of Western economies in the post cold war era we no longer have the surge capacity to ramp up production. We have basically shot our wad while Russia continues to pump out product at a rate orders of magnitude greater than Western countries because the nmantained their post WW2 capacity and continued to update and modernize. Russia always believed they would have to fight NATO on the Ukrainian steppe one day as they fought invaders there so many times through history. They lost 27 million people the last time out and they are paranoid.
I disagree Megs. The west has mostly sent over old surplus that is kicking Russia's ass. Russia has old factories that make mostly old junk. If we got half serious, we could easily arm Ukraine to the point it causes Russia to collapse. Russia is in serious economic and military trouble and has lost the ability to project power like it used to. Hell, reports are half of its ammo is old north Korean crap, and most of its drones are from Iran. Add in a massive drop in recruitment, and Russia is in big trouble.
Also, Europe (finally) has decided to get serious about military spending. That trend will last a decade at least.
My best guess is Europe will fund Ukraine til Ukraine wins. The Baltic nations will see to that. Hell, they might even send troops. NapoleMacron has hinted at it. Fortress Europa.
Strangely, the USA could end this war in a week just by emptying warehouses of Bradleys, Abrams, Aamrams, Tomahawks and other old stuff. Trump could beat Putin, and brag about it for 4 years. Too bad he is going the wrong way.
But, a side effect is that the USA will have to face China without major european assistance.
And in the long run, democracies (Europe, Canada, Japan, Korea, Australia and a few others) will trade mostly among themselves, and be stronger for it.
Or, we all die in an Armageddon initiated by the leaves winning the cup.
The Cup is soooooo ours!!!!!!!
