With Russia’s military depleted, and their production and manufacturing not being what one would call first class, the NATO members and EU members, will have the same 5 years to prepare to meet that threat.

Yeah, increasing, sure, but tripling shouldn’t be necessary.
Even though the US is the single greatest contributor, the combined support from Europe is already greater than that from the US.

But with Russia getting North Koreans to fight for them, we may eventually have to send troops to put an end to Russian aggression. Ukraine has one third of the Russian population, and with the Russians adding foreign troops it gets even more lopsided. Sure, the Russians treat their own soldiers as cannon fodder, so there are roughly five Russian casualties for every Ukrainian one, but still. It is unfair that Ukraine should have to fight this war alone when peace and security in Europe is at stake.

Europe hasn’t really prepared for war. We outnumber the Russians, no problem, but they are heavily militarized and we have been dismantling our military, believing there was no real threat of war in modern society. We thought after the fall of the Soviet Union Russia would become a normal country and stop invading their neighbours. And for a decade or two that seemed to be the case.

The problem now is that now everyone is scrambling to strengthen their own military while simultaneously sending armaments to Ukraine, and our military industry can’t keep up. Swedish arms producers have their order books filled for the next decade and are working around the clock.

Also, we don’t have a joint EU army, every country has its own. Now, most EU countries are Nato members, so they have trained to cooperate, and some have actual war experience. Most of us do not, as we have exclusively focused on defense, not fighting wars abroad. To send Swedish troops to fight in a different country goes against the world view we’ve grown up with. Our last war was against Napoleon.
Our military hasn’t been built for this and our soldiers have solely been trained to defend our own territory.

But things change, and maybe we will have to change as well. If the rules based world order no longer is supported by the USA, and Russia and China have always been sceeptical of it, maybe it is time for Europe to become a military superpower instead of just an economic one.

But a ceasefire in Ukraine would mainly help Russia. They already have their military industry in place and can churn out new tanks, missiles and artllery shells much faster than the EU. We have to start by building factories.
