My two bits for what it's worth.

I've expressed my concern about the player since I returned from a years long hiatus 3/4 years back (was accepted into the fold post Doc Jeopardy Quiz on The Life of Lever in GDHTMB's as I recall) and nothing has changed for me over that time.

My opinion is the contract was a knee jerk decision for reasons truthfully (to us) unknown and also a dramatic overpay.

As I've always said we shall see.

Not sure I agree with Mëds ponderings on room issues either....

.....BUT...

...a somewhat potentially interesting dynamic amongst all that chit chat is that Sprong and EP were tight no????

And Sprong was summarily dismissed partially due to "room issues"...

Where's my tin foil?

Well Petey has much better friends than Sprong on the team.

I don't know if you've ever really seen Petey in Full Genius Mode there Donny

His skating concerns me.

Same was said of the Sedins at that age.

And yes, Full Genius Mode Pete is comparable.

In my ridiculously humble opinion.

Perhaps....skating to me is more integral in today's game.

Sedins at 26 I think were more intent on fitness than EP as well.

And more focussed overall.

As I said...we shall see...

I admire your defense of the player...

The Sedins were never fleet of foot. In 2005-06 they were EP’s age and Their game that season took a huge step forward. They became legit top-6 forwards and continued to get better over the next 4-5 years. However, as you would have seen (so why state it right?) they used the boards and their bodies to shield the puck and move it around quickly in a cycle to create lanes and exploit chasing defenders. Pettersson lacks the physical strength to do that, he’s a scrawny player that plays a finesse game requiring quick bursts of speed to go with his IQ and hands in order to create space for himself, as you mentioned: his skating was (still is) a concern…..he doesn’t have the feet for it.

Topper observed that against Calgary his skating looked better…..that was gone against the Islanders.

$11.6M and still requiring skating lessons? That should have been a hard pass by the team. JR/PA are too experienced in their roles to have not seen that. The contract stinks of Aqualini impatience.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Pettersson is the same size/build as the Sedins... so no, not more "scrawny" than they.

I'd say his skating is a tad better than theirs were at his age.

BTW, I distinctly remember Sedins, around that age, hiring a skating coach to help them.

Plenty of established NHLers do that these days, recall Horvat doing dat dere a few years ago.

"still requiring skating lessons?"

As far as the contract, the consensus around the league at the time was that it was right were it should be.

The Pettersson signing thread at HF (still there) confirms this.

So put your tinfoil hat away Mëds, "Aqualini impatience" had nothing to do with it.

And I mean, as if JR would let Aquaman dictate such a thing...

This was just a game where pretty much anything that could go wrong just happened. Isles were on, and the Canucks were hapless. Those games will happen. I appreciate that Tocchet realizes he has to get more proactive and change an evident funk in the team’s play.

I believe most players do have skating coaches, Gary Roberts name comes to mind as a coach many use.

IN THE OFF SEASON, so they show up at camp ready to go - not five or ten games into the season

Ahh fan consensus. Then it must be true. LOL. There was a few hear that saw Scooter not worth the money at the time and were more than willing to see him moved if he decided to be stubborn (like wanting more than Nylander).

Yeah if they don't come out flying tonight then there is a need for concern.
I think they can have a mulligan on this one.

Roberts has always been a nutrition/strength-training guy.

(and he only takes on a coupla dozen NHLers per summer... who tend to return year by year).

Most players DO NOT have skating coaches, and certainly not in the era to which I referred.

It was big news when the Sedins hired a skating coach back in the day.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/370823 ... iel-sedin/

"So in their early 20s, Henrik and Daniel commissioned a skating coach in Sweden, Mats Emanuelsson, who put them on a strict regimen of two-a-day on-ice practices and labored to rebuild their skating strides."

(it goes on, worth a read)

Of course in the offseason, that's what we're talking about.

But Petey was in no shape (recovering from tendonitis in knee) to do that this past offseason.

I'm not talking about "fan consensus" per se.

If you read that thread, you'll see many quotes from so-called experts and even some NHL managers.

Fans (not all) tend to agree with the talking heads and relay their opinions.

Pettersson's contract was forecast to be... about where it ended up being.

Per se

Roberts is mentioned as one of many.

Oh yeah, the tendonitis excuse. I, like his coaches, don't buy it.

Kids playing Junior are all doing off season power skating.
