Re: Canucks Young Guns
Willander is starting to look more and more like Gus Forsling. I rewatched some video of his defensive acumen and there is some definite similarities there.
That would be a fantastic add to the defense.

Willander doesn’t make Elite Prospects Top 50 NHL prospects list. He gets voted 60th. Lekkerimaki gets 43rd.

Re: Canucks Young Guns
Well it's not going to get any better what with Allvin's penchant for trading away upper round picks.

The 2020 and 2021 draft years were completely fruitless.
There is still hope for Hoglander and Silovs, but really, outside of Hughes and Petey, Benning has nothing to show for 6 straight years of drafting. We can all thank Yzerman for Quinn Hughes.

Re: Canucks Young Guns
Our 2020 1st round pick was traded for JT Miller.
Our 2020 2nd round pick was traded for Toffoli.
(Miller and Toffoli bore fruit)
Our 2021 1st round pick was traded for.... Garland?

The Allvin 2024 draft year was also pretty fruitless.
(1st traded for a rental, 2nd as a sweetener)
Dafock dude, on Wednesday you gave him credit for drafting Boeser and Demko.
How soon we forget.
My response to that post of yours:
Podkolzin also a tweener... or more.Strangelove wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 6:07 pmI would argue Benning's drafting was better than most.
(and dude, those are some beauty picks right there!)
He was brought in with a mandate to return the team to the playoffs after the team missed in 2013-14.
(owners said they owed it to the Sedins)
And he did manage to get them back to the playoffs.
Benning had managed to grab Demko in the second round a couple of months after being hired.
After making the playoffs, as per the mandate, Benning managed to get Boeser at 23rd O/A.
Then 4 losing seasons, followed by 1st round picks Juolevi, Pettersson, Hughes, and Podkolzin.
Maybe 2 blown picks, but it might be too early to write-off the Pod.
Still, he had acquired Demmer and Boeser later than expected, so, doing well overall.
The next draft was 2020 in which Nucks did not have a pick in the first 2 rounds.
The 1st was dealt for JT Miller and the 2nd for Toffoli.
Two trades that were considered good for your Vancouver Canucks.
The next year Canucks did not have a first due to the big trade.
That trade did not work out so well for us, although we still have Garland to show for it.
A few months later Benning was relieved of his duties.
He also managed to draft some other NHLers along the way like...
Forsling, McCann, Hoglander, and Silovs.
And some tweeners like Gadjovich, Kole Lind, Lockwood, Gaudette (don't laugh, 220 games!), Brisebois.
I mean, by definition, tweeners aren't exactly awesome, but they're needed.

Re: Canucks Young Guns
Allow me to clarify for you Doc, Benning’s last 6 years at the draft table were after he picked Boeser and Demko.
Now, by draft years being fruitless, I was referring to all the draft picks Benning actually picked, not the assets acquired with top picks.
I’m simply following up on the previous post showing the players present for next weeks prospect camp. A quick glance shows Klimovic as the only Benning holdover at prospect camp.
Nothing else from 2020 or 2021. Not good enough.

Thanks, if I were a mind reader I suppose I would have already known what the hell you were talking about there.

Yes, I know that's what you you were doing.
I was adding to the conversation by pointing out those draft picks were put to good use.
I was adding to the conversation by pointing out WHY those 2 drafts were "fruitless".
You're welcome.
Well the immediately preceding post was actually mine
... so I assumed you were responding to that, and maybe picking up on our convo from Wednesday.
But hey man, whatevs, it's all good, make love not war.
Well yeah, that's because top picks from those years were traded away... did I neglect to mention that?

Just because the top picks were dealt away doesn’t absolve Jimbo from failing to gain assets through draft picks.Strangelove wrote: ↑Tue Sep 10, 2024 6:25 pmThanks, if I were a mind reader I suppose I would have already known what the hell you were talking about there.![]()

There are plenty of examples of players drafted after the second round that become decent to great assets.
In 8 years, Benning drafted a whopping two players after the 2nd round who became an NHL regular, Forsling and Gaudette.
Not even close to good enough, particular from a GM who made his bones in scouting.

Re: Canucks Young Guns
But he DID gain assets from those particular draft picks!
JT Miller, Toffoli, Garland...
What assets do we have from the 2014 1st and 2nd picks Allvin dealt away?
So we've talked about 1st round picks and now we're talking about "players drafted after the 2nd round"
... move the goalposts much BoS?

Bro, you don't get to dictate the terms of the discussion!
We're talking about how good of a drafter James Elmer Benning was!
Did you do this with hopes of excluding 2nd rounders Demko, Hoglander, Klimovich (Woo even) from the convo?
Just sayin, odd to stop talking about the 1st round and skip the 2nd round altogether.
Are you now admitting Benning did well overall in in the first 2 rounds
... and asking but what about the 3rd/4th/5th/6th/7th?

Okay, well beyond the 2nd round, you named Forsling and Gaudette
Did you forget about Silovs and have you written off McDonough?
Because drafting 3 regular NHLers and one star (Forsling) beyond the 2nd round over 8 drafts is pretty awesome.
EDIT: Gadjovich too. And tweeners Kole Lind, Lockwood, and Brisebois.

Re: Canucks Young Guns
What a mess. Let's call the trade for Toffoli a success but the trade for Lindholm was bad.
They got Garland for the 2021 1st rounder. Yeah and slug called OEL who they needed to buy out.
But now McCann and Forsling are draft successes. What a fucking dump.
