Oilers don’t match either offer sheet. After all their moves, I thought they would match Broberg’s. Actually surprised here.

Sounds like the Blues also made a ‘thank you’ transaction with Edmonton as well today:
In a separate transaction, St. Louis is sending its 2028 third-round draft pick and unsigned 2023 fifth-round draft selection Paul Fischer to Edmonton for future considerations.

Sounds like a side deal to me. Guess they don’t want the GM hate going back and forth like the Habs and Carolina.

You have to wonder whether the Oilers are having trouble finding Kane a season ending injury. Or whether, like the Canucks, they want to wait to LTIR him until after the season starts to maximize flexibility. But with over 900K and Kane not LTIR’ed, don’t be surprised if they add another league minimum tweener defensemen or two to compete for a roster spot in the short term.

I never expected that I would want to see Evander Kane 95% healthy. I hope he has an unproductive full 82 game season. :) :D

Bowman made the right choice. He can’t afford inflated contracts from players that may turn out to be decent, but more likely may not. He already has Nurse. The Oilers will be in the playoffs. Early in the season they might fall behind the Canucks and Knights because their defence is shit, but they’ll be able to use those extra 2nd and 3rd round draft picks and their growing cap space to pick up better defensemen from teams that fall out of the playoffs at the trade deadline, that is if Stecher isn’t dominating the league in the top four. :wow:

My guess is that its not about GM hate at all, but part of the negotiation with the Oilers to not match one or both.

When the Oilers cleared Ceci, they could legitimately face the Blues and say "we can match both players with Kane on the LTIR." (They could do this and be under the cap with LTIR, but they'd need to waive Pod or Ryan or Perry). Until they move Ceci, they cannot credibly represent this.

The Blues would look at that and conclude they are probably just talking about Broberg, though it is possible they could keep both or just want to keep Holloway. And the Blues say something like, "we aren't doing this to screw you over. We are doing this to add young players with upside to our group; our window is starting to open and we think they can be part of it. So I'll tell you what, we will give you back the sweetener it took to unload Ceci (the third)."

Oilers respond, "thank you, but we are going to need a little more than that. We are thinking a B tier defensive prospect." Blues respond, "that's fine, we can offer one of (Blues provide list of names)." Oilers respond hopefully, "Lukas Fischer?" Blues, "No, Paul Fischer." Oilers, "We'd prefer Lukas." Blues, "not on the table." Long pause. Muffled sidebar. Oilers, "Okay, Paul then. And to complete the deal, we'll send you a player of our choosing that we are going to waive after camp or a draft pick we are not going to sign." Blues, "So long as its an unsigned player or a two-way contract, agreed." Oilers, "agreed."

And the totals since the offer sheets....

From Blues perspective, Holloway and Broberg acquired for a 2d, 2 3rds, and a defensive defenseman prospect who retains modest NHL development potential though probably tops out as a 4-5. (Not counting the player to be named, as it will be at best a would-be-waived player).

From the Oiler's perspective, Subtract Holloway, Broberg, Ceci, and a 4th and get under cap even without LTIR, and add Podkolzin, Emberson (a 6-8 D), a 2d, a 3d, and a B/C tier defensive prospect. Also, from Oilers perspective, no more need to find Kane a surgery, and room to fill out roster with one more league minimum player.

The Oilers are certainly not better as a result of the offer sheet, but they have more flexibility to get better. And given the weakness of the Pacific, they probably don't have any pressing need to get better until the deadline.

Oiler weakness remains in net and on the blue line.

Click bait headline this morning suggesting Calgary trying to move Kuz.

Blues probably also judging they won’t have enough contract slots to sign Fischer going forward. Looking at PuckPedia, they currently have 53 contracts, three more than their 50 limit, so they are juggling and prioritizing who they plan to sign going forward. The Oilers only have 44 contracts filled, so they have spots available for prospects they have interest in.

With Skinner, they have that dangerous "good enough" goalie where a team convinces themselves an upgrade isn't worth the price and then complains about losing while outplaying their opponent's whose goalie steals games in the playoffs.

I don't think there's any question that they got worse on D. Both Ceci and Broberg were likely slated to be in the top 6. And if Ekholm starts hitting the age wall? Things could get ugly.

On the other hand, Bouchard can improve his defensive play, Nurse has played better in the past and could do so again, and Ekholm could repeat his season. Still, its crazy to look at this roster and think that money on the wing ($7 million on Skinner and Arvidsson) was the best place for it. In the abstract, all of the acquisitions and re-signings (Skinner, Arvidsson, Janmark, Henrique, Perry) were individually decent deals (Perry being the most questionable), but were they really what Edmonton needed most? I don't think so.

Sergacheyov was 9th.

McAvoy 14th.
Re-draft

1. Matthews
2. Tkachuk
3. McAvoy
4. Keller
5. Fox
6. Tage Thompson
7. DeBrincat
8. Sergachev
9. Hronek
10. Kyrou
11. Samuel Girard
12. Chychrun
13. Ryan Lindgren
14. Michael McLeod

All in all it’s a pretty sad draft class for what was once hyped as a supposed great class. The first round drops off like a shelf on the edge of the Mariana Trench

This is as good as speculation as any. Could very well have gone down this way.
They could have also preplanned the entire thing, and pre negotiated in your scenario.
meh.
In the end, I agree, Coilers did not get better yet, but they did add wiggle room.

drop the puck already.. I watched Shorsey to curb my jonesing, but it hasnt really helped :D  :drink:

I my mind, Skinner is more Dan Cloutier than Roberto Luongo on that scale of "just not good enough."

The way he folded and was benched in the playoffs was telling.
