Re: Post season wrap up.
While we all noticed EP decline after the all star break, he still managed to be good value during *this* regular season. His new contract has yet to kick in and people are acting as though his decline and 11.6 coexist but they do not. Those who speculate that this decline is permanent ignore his proven body of work. At this time he remains over a point a game with more than 400 games played.
Pettersson, Elias 89pts $7,350,000
Aho, Sebastian 89pts $8,460,250
Tkachuk, Matthew 88pts $9,500,000
Josi, Roman 85pts $9,059,000
I remember MacKinnon having to re-invent himself a few years back and he was able to take his play to another level. I could be wrong, but I expect we will see a similar outcome with EP40.
If the fans, the media and the organization would have just let EP play out the year before signing a new contract (rather than nagging at him and threatening him with trades) ... he may have signed for less.

Pettersson is an above average skater in terms of overall speed, his acceleration is average at best, he has a knock-kneed stance and his lateral movement is below average. He is 6'2" and 180lbs (probably in equipment).griz wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2024 3:56 pm While we all noticed EP decline after the all star break, he still managed to be good value during *this* regular season. MacKinnon is an explosive skater with a wide stance and stride, hard to push off the puck, has one of the best crossovers in the league and is probably the best player at ripping a shot while in mid-stride. He is 6 feet tall and 200 lbs.
There is no comparison here.
I recall reading an article about MacKinnon's off-season training regimen prior to that "reinvention" you speak of. It's nuts (link below).

I don't see this at all in Eleven Pointsixersson.

Lol. I wasn't comparing him *to* MacKinnon as a player, only the potential for a similar re-invention.Mëds wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2024 6:14 pm Pettersson is an above average skater in terms of overall speed, his acceleration is average at best, he has a knock-kneed stance and his lateral movement is below average. As for Petey I'm going to give him some slack for now and see how things play out. Against the grain I know. I think if EP gets his game back and many of the other super stars sign contracts far above his cost (Edmonton...) things will seem more like how they should. Miller's contract has aged quite nicely for example. And many were freaking out about it at first. I wonder if EPs contract will seem like a good one given a few years?

I was actually thinking about trading TD35 in the playoffs, but didn't want to say anything till the season was over. I like Demko and all, but I was never convinced he has the durability to handle the workload of a star #1 backstop. True enuff, my fears became true in the post-season. I thought Tocc was quite careful in managing Thatcher's workload all year as he never played back to back games, yet he still gets injured. I actually heard Jimmy Robson say the same thing, that mgmt should consider trading TD35 as we could potentially get 3 solid pieces in return for him and maybe even get some cap space.Blob Mckenzie wrote: ↑Tue May 21, 2024 11:40 am Silovs is on the team and Demko maybe plays 50 games and if the kid is the real deal, trade Thatcher.
I really like Silovs. He had a great playoffs, but he did cool down a bit later in that Oil series. To get a lil insurance from trading TD35 and to not put all the pressure on Silovs, mgmt can just go out and sign a cheap veteran goalie who has a better NHL resume than Desmith, maybe look at a guy like L.Brossoit, Martin Jones or Cam Talbot. Ask for Clarky's input, then just go with whoever he recommends.

I’m not opposed to this idea. I’ve certainly entertained the same concern regarding durability.Todd Bersnoozi wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2024 9:53 pmI was actually thinking about trading TD35 in the playoffs, but didn't want to say anything till the season was over. The other piece is that his contract is up in 2 years and he will be the wrong age to be extending on his payday contract. He will be 30 going 31 when the ink dries on wherever his next deal is signed, so unless he’s willing to sign for no more than 3 years, I’m for moving on. Not too many goaltenders over the age of 34 are backstopping teams from October to June these days.
I disagree with Robson on the potential return. Goalies just don’t tend to bring back much.

ROFLMAO, no way do you trade away a top 5 goalie on a great contract!
And no way do you thrust young Silovs into the starting role at this point.
Talk about "a recipe for disaster".
Demko will be the starter next year and Silovs the backup.
See where it goes...

Re: Post season wrap up.
I've advocated for the trade Demko before, before last season started. But after the season they had they can't trade him now. They are trying to build a team that can compete every year. I'm sorry, as much as I liked what Silovs accomplished he wasn't a NHL starter comparable. He was a decent back up. In fact, he should have sat game 6 in Edmonton. Even game 7 I would have come back with DeSmith. Edmonton figured Silovs out and it showed. He still needs more work with Clark.

Agree. Keep Demko for at least 1 more season.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2024 9:47 pm I've advocated for the trade Demko before, before last season started. Though Tocchet should have gone back to DeSmith after game 4. Yes, I know Silovs won game 5 but I would have gone to DeSmith for that one.

agree with this. Silvos was put in a horrible position and played incredibly well with that context, but with Demko in net I think we beat Edmonton.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Wed Jun 12, 2024 9:47 pm I've advocated for the trade Demko before, before last season started. Maybe we re-consider this though at the end of next year, if this season coming up our team comes back down to earth, becomes a bubble playoff team, likely meaning Demko isn't playing other-worldly, and if Silvos shows more consistently that these past playoffs weren't just a flash in the pan. Maybe then we are looking at a small re-tool and willing to downgrade in net some to be a better team a few years later.
Keep in mind too - Silvos was put in a position to be the every day starter in Abby and he didn't put up great numbers and wasn't even the clear number 1.

Re: Post season wrap up.
Ya I like Silovs but from what I have seen he gives us average goaltending along the lines of Toronto, Edmonton and a number of hopeful teams without all star goaltending. Having Demko is a huge part of our hope.

Re: Post season wrap up.
In the games we lost, yeah, the goals that went in are likely stopped by Demko. However, in those games, and in the ones we won, Silovs made some incredible saves that you cannot guarantee that any goaltender would make (nor would he likely make again).Raile wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 12:58 pmagree with this. The only way that we beat Edmonton with Demko in net is IF it meant the skaters played differently in front of him and generated (and converted on) more actual scoring chances.

You are absolutely right about us not being competitive without Demko, at least next season.Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Thu Jun 13, 2024 1:25 pm Ya I like Silovs but from what I have seen he gives us average goaltending along the lines of Toronto, Edmonton and a number of hopeful teams without all star goaltending. My agreeing with trading Demko is predicated upon seeing what we have in Silovs at the end of next season after he has had a year working with Clarke on a regular basis. I remember Demko looking equally as brilliant sometimes in his rookie and +1 seasons behind Markstrom (particularly the bubble). Even last year Demko faltered, and had to find his focus. This year he was Vezina calibre. We all know goaltenders take time to hit their stride in the NHL against the top level skaters.
As I have said, Demko will be 31 years old 2.5 months into the first season of his next contract. His play this season probably guarantees him a new contract where negotiating the AAV doesn't even start below $8M. I don't see him settling for a 4 year contract, and anything more than that would be foolish.
