Re: Around the league (signings, RFAs injuries)
They will be something before Jan !st I bet. That's so long, it changes too much. TBH, owners shouldn't have to pay salaries in full.

Haven't ya heard Micky?
Owners and players split revenues 50/50.

Pretty soon there won't be anything to split. Most of the staff at GM Pla Rogers has been laid off. Think Ian Clark needs a contract.Strangelove wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 9:53 pmHaven't ya heard Micky?

Travis needs a contract.
All the time that went by before the bubble hockey started, I think I watched part of 2 retro games they were airing during the long break.
Exhibition, (insured of course), bubble televised games? No, that wont work.
December 1st is more palatable.

What kind of an answer is that to me mocking you for saying "owners shouldn't have to pay salaries in full"?Micky wrote: ↑Fri Sep 11, 2020 12:31 amPretty soon there won't be anything to split.Strangelove wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 9:53 pmHaven't ya heard Micky?

BTW they won't be...
What do these things have to do with what we're talking about?
Are you suggesting Canucks are about to go broke?
Travis has one more year on his current contract by the way...
Straight up gobbledygook right there.
Why?
The NHL brain trust is suggesting December 1st is not more palatable.
The NHL brain trust is suggesting January is more palatable.

Doc trusts the NHL brain trust. This much is clear.

Well I see their logic/wisdom and you have yet to present a contrary case at all.

Should I trust your... what... hunch?... over the NHL brain trust?
Have any opinion you want Mick, but if you expect anyone to give it any credence whatsoever

Otherwise it's just more gobbledygook.

surprised they would go with a 82 game season unless they truly believe they'll be out of the bubble. (they wont)Strangelove wrote: ↑Thu Sep 10, 2020 6:37 pm https://www.tsn.ca/video/insider-tradin ... ch~2031507
Lebrun says Bill Daly admits the 2020-21 season probably wont start until January.
Which of course would make it the 2021-21 season.![]()
Still insists it will be an 82-game season though.
Says they will not play a bubble season.
Dreger says a bunch of teams will have internal caps next season in the low 70s.
Wouldn't it make sense to start the season in 4 bubbles (one for each division)?
Play all those inter-division games and hope there's a vaccine by then?
Anyhoo, expect playoff hockey next summer as well...
so that will make 3 compromised seasons instead of 2. Not seeing the logic
We'll burn that bridge when we get to it

Maybe they figure there'll be a vaccine or herd immunity by January?
Maybe they figure they can open at one-quarter capacity in January?
Or maybe they're just wishing and hoping at this point.
Everything is still tentative at this point.
I could see a sched with back-to-backs in the same city that could complete 82 games per team in 4.5 months.
Maybe not be quite that quick, but we all know next season will be super compressed.

Re: Around the league (signings, RFAs injuries)
Too much distance from the game. Not good for the business of fan awareness. It may well be January before it's feasible. Don't
know if that's what I'd be announcing in the present. Why?
Why cram 82 games in the first season back? 20 / 21 could be a 58-62 game season with regular playoffs.
21 /22 could hopefully be completely normal.
I don't know when a vaccine will be available to stop the spread and fear. I think something will come before this year is done.
Since the TV revenue is the only real money-maker right now, less games could mean better times for Cities to watch their teams.
The two game, back-to-back, home / away mini series for the next regular season is a great idea.
One thing that isn't spoken of too much, through politeness i guess, is that the NHL and NBA have completely different situations and obstacles
to deal with. They should chill out a little on the competition and try to work with time-slots that aren't meant to kill the other's viewership.

Re: Around the league (signings, RFAs injuries)
So you think the NHL brain trust should lie to the fans because you think it would help hold fan interest in the NHL.
You think the NHL brain trust is being too honest for their own good!
And yet you just (mockingly) said: "Doc trusts the NHL brain trust. This much is clear."
Dammit Mick, we were counting on you!

Well okay then! Thanks for throwing us a bone!

Wait... "TV revenue is the only real money-maker right now" therefore "less games on TV" is the way to go?

Yeahno, I'm not going to argue with that kind of logic...

Re: Around the league (signings, RFAs injuries)
Sounds like a decent amount of teams are considering internal salary caps of $70-75 million, in addition to the salary and staffing cuts that have been occurring, so you have to wonder how much this impacts the negotiations with Markstrom, Tanev, and Toffoli. I'd expect things to tighten up further between now and the free agent window opening. Would make moving a Sutter or Baertschi contract tougher but might be slightly easier to dump Eriksson.
Re: Around the league (signings, RFAs injuries)
If it's any consolation, there are teams in worse shape then we are in regard to hard choices. Which GMs will be first in setting the trend in cost cutting. If Benning and the Canucks can hold out a while, till the realization of smaller then "the norm" term lengths and salaries to all players up for renewal, that would be ideal. Patience is difficult though.Curmudgeon wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 12:19 pm Sounds like a decent amount of teams are considering internal salary caps of $70-75 million, in addition to the salary and staffing cuts that have been occurring, so you have to wonder how much this impacts the negotiations with Markstrom, Tanev, and Toffoli.
