NHL WASHINGTON CAPITALS 1h ago
Capitals extend C Backstrom on five-year, $46M deal

The deal will carry an average annual value of $9.2 million for Backstrom, who will turn 33 later this year. As TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun notes, Backstrom negotiated the deal by himself, acting without an agent.
https://www.tsn.ca/washington-capitals- ... -1.1427099

 nice work, Nick.
Who needs an agent when you can do that?

If you think about it, Backstrom's comp is Sedin. Signed this final contract at same age, I believe. Expecting the cap to go up to $84.5 next year, each Sedins' final contract was $8.6 million in adjusted dollars (as percentage of Cap). That Backstrom got another year and $600K is a bit of a coup, though to be fair, the Sedins were coming off their worst season to date. But to be fair to the Sedins, Backstrom's best was not quite as good as the Sedins' best, the peak was earlier in Backstrom's career, and the Sedins never played with the best goal scorer of a generation....

The price difference isn't explained by NMC, either. Backstrom has one for 3 years (must be protected in expansion draft).
I think the Sedins' slightly lower cap can be explained by group discount.... Buy two, get 6.5% off!

Some of us liked this trade from the day it happened.

Every dog has its day eh Gillis? :P

One needs-be psychologically strong to be an NHL goaltender.

Those suffering from panic attacks aren't going to cut it in the long run.

Tis a shame because Schneids is such a gifted athlete.

Speaking of dogs, I recall ole DiamondDog at HF being extremely distraught at the trade.

He was ranting and raving about how sure he was Mr Schneider would win a Vezina within a few years.

So I created a thread there, ended up betting him $100 on dat dere.

(loser had to donate $100 to the site)

Twas a four-page thread that eventually got locked.

Two years ago I gently reminded DiamondDog he had lost the bet and gave a link to the thread.

Some mod deleted my post and soon thereafter deleted the thread.

DiamondDog has a mod in his back pocket.

But he knows, I know, and I'm sure many remember how DiamondDog panicked when the trade was made

... and how wrong he ended up being (not to mention him being a WELSHER).

Funny to think NHL Captain Bo makes le$$ than AHL Cory....
Schneider played in 3 games, sucked more balls and is probably gone from the bigs for good.

Maybe you could collect on your debt now that its safe to say there's no Vezina in his future

In 6 drafts only one legitimate NHL’er and two whatevs in Hutton Connauton. The one legitimate draft pick came at the expense of a major asset thanks to Nonis. No Schneider, Shinkaruk is all we have to show for of that first round, ouch. So no Schneider no Horvat and just Hutton and Connauton in 6 drafts, and we wonder why Bennings job here hasn’t been easy. But let’s just sweep that under the carpet quietly

In the mean time, in 6 drafts Benning has:

Virtanen
McCann
Demko
Boeser
Gaudette
Pettersson
Hughes

All playing in the NHL and more on the way from those 6 drafts in Podkolzin, Juolevi, Tryamkin, Hoglander, Madden, Woo, DiPietro, Lind etc

The latest episode 7 has Zack as their guest. Best episode so far. Really revealing and good to hear how he's turned his life around.

All those idiots who gave JB shit... you now understand why he just had to give up an asset and take back Prust to move Kassian out of town.

Also good was the Burrows episode. I think it was either 2 or 3.

I think most people understood the trade after Kassian’s truck got plowed into a tree in a mid summer snowstorm Chef style. There were rumours beforehand and sure there were murmurs of him howling at the moon when he played here. I think once it came out that he was a raging pisstank and blow head, people understood why they moved him. Thing is they would have been better to waive him in hindsight. Brandon Prust was a fucking douchebag and a garbage can on skates who couldn’t fight or play. He was a poisonous asshole to the young kids on the team.

Yeahno, hoping a team would claim him on waivers wouldn't have worked.

GMs are made aware of every player who goes into Stage One of the substance abuse program.

(though the media and public are not made aware)

(media and public can be made aware if/when the player goes into Stage Two)

Kassian entered Stage One in Vancouver, so every GM in the league knew he had a serious problem.

From there his behavior was obvious... to those who knew... as not that of a man who was buying into the program.

Canucks had to take Prust on to move Kassian, Montreal had to take Scrivens on to move Kassian.

Kassian had negative value due to his issues at the time.

I had inside of the inside scoop on Zacks snow blowing when he was in Vancouver. It was ramped up. Even mentioned here but ole stubborn Blobbee wanted none of it
