It's getting warm

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

So at the age of 8, after seeing some no debunked climate alarmist pictures, young Greta's aspergers kicked in and launched her on a single minded obsession to fight climate change.

Her obsessive compulsive actions are a result of her mental illness.

The same mental illness and single minded determination that drove Adam Lanza's obsessive compulsion disorder.
I’m not sure Asperger’s should be considered a mental illness. People who have it are as smart or smarter than regular people. They are just wired differently. They are hyper~logical and tend to do really well in academics, many professors have it, but have problems reading other people and usually do not irony or sarcasm. They are a bit like Spock from star trek.

It definitely has bearing on her activism. She doesn’t understand the illogical behaviour of ”normal” people. How can we worry about climate change and then fly to Thailand for a vacation? It does not compute in her hyperlogical mind.

It’s already taking care of itself. In two thirds of the countries of the world fertility rates are now at less than two children per woman, ie the rate necessary to maintain a steady population.

Look at the population pyramids:

The only place where it still looks like a pyramid is Africa, the most sparsely populated continent, and even there it is beginning to change as poverty is reduced.

Nice curves.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

OK, but on every continent, except in Africa, there are too few children born to maintain a steady population, ie the population will start to decline. Slowly though, because people live longer today, so it may tale another 50 years until the population really starts to decline. But we’ve passed peak child on every continent but Africa.

Even in Latin America, there were more people born twenty years ago than today.

When women have a right to choose, and access to contraceptives, the number of births go down.

There’s a problem though...

If you look at the European pyramid, as that bulge continues to move up...
Eventually we will have more people who are retired than who are working.
That’s going to mess up the economy really bad.

One of the measures we could take is to have people retire much later.
Or we could encourage immigration of people in working ages.

But something needs to be done to address it.

Here are some weird ones:

Image

The Russians have a xmas tree.
Apparently they stopped having children roughly at the time the Soviet Union collapsed.
Also note that Russian men drink themselves into an early grave. A whole lot of men missing at the top of the tree.

Image

The Chinese one is also weird. I assume they loosened the one child policy thirty years ago, and a lot of families added a second child really quickly, then they stopped again. I’m not really sure, but I think they now have a policy where one child families have free school and health care, but if you choose to have more children, you have to pay for school and healthcare yourself for all your children.

Image

Italy is a mess. Their bulge is about to retire, and there are barely any children.
Who will pay taxes to pay for those pensions? Who will take care of the elderly?
It’s a ticking time bomb.

Image

Germany is almost as bad.

The Swedish one is also odd:Image

We had a baby boom right after WWII, from 1945 to 1949.
They then had children in the latter half of the 1960’s and they in turn had children in the late 80’s, early 90’s.
These three clusters are quite

Thanks to that last cluster, we’re slightly better off than the Germans and Italians.
We’re also one of the European nations with the highest birth rate, presumably because of our subsidised day care and generous parental leave.

And finally, Canada:

Image

Looks fairly European. Not as bad as Germany or Italy, but still problematic.

You need to either start having more children, increase immigration or raise the retirement age, or perhaps most likely a combination of all three.

As I said, her Asperger’s definitely is part of her determined stance, but it’s good that the problems of climate change are getting more attention. Maybe the politicians will finally get their thumbs out of their asses and start doing something.
