If Vasiline was a north american prospect he wouldve gone 3rd for sure. Its up to Benning and Co. to figure out the how part of appeasing the russian art of selfishness in a team sport environment
Agreed, I think a big help to that is letting him cook that extra year, he'll be more ready to step in to the top 6, rather than work his way up from the farm.
I cant think of many scenarios where its more beneficial to rush a prospect into an NHL lineup at 18 or even 19...including Pettersson IMO. Especially when your team isn't knocking on the door to contend (which Van isnt just yet)
Next year will be another development year with hopefully the final high draft piece added before the teams success arc shoots us out of the golden zone. The 2020 draft has plenty of interesting prospects projecting to go in the top 10-15.
This unfortunately is how to build a deep and talented roster in todays NHL. The UFA and trade routes seem to be lateral moves at best and with the cap shriveling and expanding drafting continues to be the only way to do it right...even if it takes 6-8 fuckin years

Benning if the #Canucks had a trade in the works: "Not really, no. I read some of the stuff that was cooked up, it was good... Wasn't real but it was good."

GMBM said there was zero trade talk tonight because of concerns about the salary cap. It hasn't been set yet and it might (probably will) go down to about $80 million for next season. Weird that there were no trades tonight.

Talked to @FriedgeHNIC at draft, said some cap issues preventing the Barrie trade at the moment #Canucks #nhldraft

I mean, the GMs not having the final cap number prior to the first round of the draft is one of the most NHL things ever. Perhaps something to get fixed by next year? Geez.

lol - the only ones talking trades were the idiots at the sports stations. There are normally not a lot of trades draft day except where 1 team wants to jump up a few spots to grab a player they like.
So 1 thing we can all agree on is that regardless who JB picked RD would love the guy and say JB is a genius. Now we need to see how Blob likes this years pick, if he likes them then good, if not then we lucky folks get to hear about it for the next 2 years or until he proves himself in the NHL.

Where else would you have wanted to see Pettersson?
There was no room for improvement romping over his SHL opponents, and he turned out to be far too good for the AHL. I feel like sticking him on the farm is in Sweden would have been a wasted year - unlike for, say, McCann and Virtanen, who were not ready for the NHL.
I get the idea of further physical development for Elias, but it'll be 5 years before he's bulked up. He missed 1/4 of the season, he's had two months off already, and he looked just as slight at the awards show. Check out those pipes:
Elias dominated the SEL, led the league in scoring, a beast in the SEL playoffs, he was beyond ready.

He was tired and wore down considerably. He needs some pancakes and shit to get some meat on there to keep him from getting run down late in seasons.
Obviously he can play in the bigs and dominate but there has to be some way to beef the kid up...isnt there?
OK what do you suggest? Send him to Utica after winning the Calder? Back to Sweden to beef up?

Not now dude. Last year.
Fuck nevermind. You guys are right...the kid just won the fuckin calder. Plus I'm seriously enjoying this wake and bake buzz and defending something dumb like that isn't gonna happen lol

I like Podkozlin’s combination of grit, size, competitiveness and skill. Gets compared to Timo Meier. Its also good to hear he is a solid 200’ player. Great pick, we needed a winger in the top 6. This puts the needed pressure on Jake to step it up.
They say he could actually be here after next season, not sure how, since he’s signed for two in the K

3. Vasily Podkolzin, RW, SKA St. Petersburg (VHL), 6-foot-1, 190 pounds: One scout deemed him a “special player.” Some teams will be out on him for fear he won’t come to North America or remain here, but buyer beware, he has star potential.

If he can't get to N.A. sooner, It'll be difficult if not impossible for him to get time on NHL size ice, so;
That begs the question; Would there be anything stopping him from getting in some time with some other players on
small ice in the summer? Even if it is just f**king around.
Consider two years in KHL, then how long to adjust to NHL, (style), ice size and speed.
A quick training camp is nothin.
