CC Random thread

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

They emailed to say the withdrawal is being processed and I should have my cheque in a month.

Yup. :look:
Topper's upset because MEC is responding to consumer pressure by pulling the plug on brands tied to gun manufacturing. Several companies, notably WalMart and Dick's Sporting Goods, have taken steps to restrict firearms sales in the response to the high school shooting in Florida.

I think it's a bit sad that the corporate world is being more proactive in responding to the obscene levels of gun violence than the various levels of government in the U.S., but at least it's something (hey, the market at work!).

The 2nd Amendment limits the role of governments response. The restriction by some companies to limit sales to people over 21 may also face constitutional challenges.

Interestingly only one of the recent school shootings was done by someone under 21 and that person used his mother's legal firearm.

I'm not a stranger to guns and gun violence.

But as with nearly everything, I have little tolerance for ignorance and decisions that further ignorance.

Will the MEC whiners be trading in there Subarus along with every other company involved in weapons manufacturing?

It’s a start Topper, it has to start somewhere.

This isn’t only about being under 21, it is about criminal record check, people with mental disorders.

But people like you who are stuck in the 1800 can’t see this. You think it violates your rights to carry guns into schools, libraries and anywhere else.

There is a reason why the USA is what it is and they are supposedly the beacon of the civilized world.

Sadly this is true. There are many issues at play, one of them is that it's simply too easy to access weapons which are solely designed to kill human beings.

Nor I, although in the military (in the words of Walter Sobchak) "there are rules." Seeing these memes floating around calling for vets to be patrolling schools is terrifying.

You are talking in circles. The 2nd Amendment issues, that you claim to understand and say are true, have nothing to do with shooting squirrels.

One of the issues with the second amendment is that "well regulated" seems to have been replaced with "open carry". And I don't imagine the Founding Fathers ever envisioned .223/5.56 rounds tumbling through 6 and 7-year old bodies as fast as a demented 20-year old could pull a trigger.

Read the Heller decision.
Justice Antonin Scalia, states: “Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited…”. It is “…not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”

“Nothing in our opinion should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms.”

“We also recognize another important limitation on the right to keep and carry arms. Miller (an earlier case) said, as we have explained, that the sorts of weapons protected were those “in common use at the time”. We think that limitation is fairly supported by the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of ‘dangerous and unusual weapons.’ ”

Well it's certainly a political issue, and the constitutional challenges are probably less worrisome (to lawmakers) than the lobbyists and their advertising dollars (another depressing fact of the American landscape).

Age limits, mental health checks, a waiting period, and actually enforcing red flag laws would be a start.

Like I said, numerous factors contribute. Nobody can take more than 100ml of liquid on an airline anymore because of a single foiled bomb plot, but when it comes to warfare-level firearm violence it's "can't win, don't try".

Shooting is fun. I loved shooting my 44mag Redhawk when I had it. It was a blast. probably as exhilarating as jumping off waterfalls.
