And when specifically talking about The Troubles, you refuse to include the 1060 military or police that were killed by terrorists as well as all the civilians killed by any other group than the Provisional IRA. Admittedly the main terrorist group in the UK at that time, but there were at least nine others, and the protestant terrorist groups killed far more civilians than the catholic ones. Your figure of 600 casualties is ridiculously low, as most serious sources state something between 3500 and 3800, with more than half of the victims being civilians.

Anyway, if I really wanted to downplay the terrorism, it would be easy to point out that the number of people killed by terrorists in the EU, even in the years that it reaches more than a hundred victims, is only a fraction of the total homicide number, which in 2014 was 4379, which in turn is dwarfed compared to the 15696 or so in the USA in 2015. Thank God for sensible gun laws!

When you take in account that the EU has some 510 miljon citizens, compared to the 330 or so for the USA, the difference becomes even more staggering.

How many shootings were there in the USA today? I think I'd rather take my chances here in Europe.

Religions aren't capitalised in Swedish, nor are nationalities, weekdays or months.

I'm sure if you go through the archives you will find posts where I've written stuff like canadian, friday, november, muslim, etc as well. I know these things are supposed to be capitalised in English, and I do it most of the times, but it doesn't come naturally, so sometimes I forget. My apologies.

I don't want to downplay them so much, I mean, killing someone just because your imaginary friend tells you to is a clear sign of insanity. Those people should be locked up indefinitely, or deported, or whatever. I have no sympathy or understanding for them. It's more that I want to put the numbers in perspective.

I mean, you are aghast that with the current rate, terrorism casualties in the UK might reach 90 this year, which you state is some kind of world record, while I say that is far worse than what we've seen in the last twenty years but an average figure for a year in the eighties and slightly better than par for the seventies. More people than that died in London the other night because of a negligent landlord, and drunk drivers on average kill 300 people in the UK every single year. If we want to save lives, rather than worrying about disgruntled Immigrant youth, the smart thing would be to lock up all drunk drivers.

Let's not even talk about how many people the tobacco industry kill. I heard once that tobacco use kills more Europeans than homicides, suicides, alcohol, drugs and traffic accidents combined!
If we could ban smoking we would be saving several hundred thousand people every year from a premature death.

There is a shock factor to terrorism, and that is by purpose. The terrorists want to scare us. They want us to live in fear. Imho the best response is to yawn, fart and ask if that is all they've got.
Keep calm and carry on. Don't encourage them by letting their scare tactics get to you.

Terrorism is a weapon used by the weak. When you can't win on the battlefield, you blow up a car or something to instill fear. But the terrorists never win. And eventually they run out of supporters.
