Technically it's not an extension. It's a new contract that takes effect once the old one expires. We all still use the extension language but extensions were prohibited under the CBA when the cap came in. Since the cap is the average over the duration of the contract you can't have an extension. What you have is a player who is eligible to negotiate a new contract in their final contract year, that takes effect immediately upon expiration of the old contract.Mëds wrote:CBA question there.....
If Stamkos is traded at the deadline, can the team he goes to offer the 8 year extension as technically he would be signing an extension and not a new contract with a new team?
The only team that can offer an 8 year term is the team holding the players rights. What I am unclear about is if a team who last held a players rights can offer 8 years once the player becomes UFA on July 1st, or if that window only exists until he becomes FA. So if Tampa fails to get Stamkos a new deal and he plays out the season in Tampa, and becomes UFA in July, can Tampa still offer him 8 years? Or for that matter if he is traded can the new team offer him 8 years after July 1?
