So a guy in his prime who is never hurt and can be PPG with Bozak as his centre and has the second most points of any player in the NHL the last 3 seasons is not worth a first round pick? Kessel is the exact same player as Patrick Kane. Only Kessel has scored more. Instead, you're trying to sell me to the idea Kessel is exactly like Michael Grabner.Mëds wrote:Phillys is a naturually talented scoring winger. One of the best scoring wingers in the league.
Does he back check? No.
Does he hit? No.
Does he forecheck? Well, he skates around the offensive zone without the puck.....
Does he block shots? Accidentally.
Does he appear to have a ton of heart? Not overly.
Is he dedicated to his physical fitness?
Is he worth a 1st round pick? To a top-5 team that needs scoring help.
Is he worth a top 15 pick? Only if Garth Snow is your GM.

Phil Kessel is a premier offensive player in the league, we get it. He's good in the offensive zone. Everyhere else on the ice he's either a lazy player, or a complete liability. He's not a guy you have on the ice in the final minutes of the game when you're up by a goal. He's not a leader. He's a pretty weird dude that is good at putting pucks in the net. I would say he's not a typical "franchise" player. If he was, he'd still be a Boston Bruin.

What has Kessel won? Anywhere. A U18 Gold - impressive!BigTuna wrote: So a guy in his prime who is never hurt and can be PPG with Bozak as his centre and has the second most points of any player in the NHL the last 3 seasons is not worth a first round pick? What does he have one playoff series win under his belt? In Boston.
Yeah, success just follows this guy around everywhere he goes.
You can compare him to Kane all you like to convince yourself of his value but there are two, well three massive differences - Kane is a tad more committed to his fitness level and of course the two Stanley Cup rings he has.
Enjoy Kessticle.
Re: The Official CC "All Thing Leaves" thread
Ok, just being devil's advocate here.
Is he worth a top 15 pick? It depends on the dynamic of the team putting out the top 15 pick. If the trading team has a strong leadership core, then absolutely. Nashville for example would be a good team for Kessel. No hockey mad fanbase scrutinizing his every move and big Shea Weber to keep him in check.
Coachable.Mëds wrote:Phillys is a naturually talented scoring winger. One of the best scoring wingers in the league.

We woudln't want Hank hitting so why would the Laughs want Kessel hitting?Mëds wrote: Does he hit? No.

Refer to the above hitting comment.Mëds wrote: Does he block shots? Accidentally.
This is rotten apple problem with the Laughs and is exacerbated by the fact that their "core" is composed of players like Kessel and Phaneuf and compounded by having fluffs like David Clarkson.Mëds wrote: Does he appear to have a ton of heart? Not overly.
This is a straight up Phil Kessel problem and is the primary reason why he disappears during the playoff push (see Mason Raymond). Unfortunately (for whatever team Phil ends up on), Phil will probably go his entire career doing this type of dance. Score a whack load of goals in the first half of the season, disappear for the 2nd half and get paid in full for it (unless someone holds him accountable for this).Mëds wrote: Is he dedicated to his physical fitness?

The difference, of course, is captain serious Jonathan Toews.
They call him captain serious because, he's all business. It's also why Crosby checked with him before accepting the C for 2014 Canadian Olympic hockey men's team.
Without Toews to keep him in check, Kane would ruin the Chicago Blackhawks.

Yeahno, Kessel the Coach Killer is known as one of the most uncoachable players in the league bro.http://www.thestar.com/sports/leaves/201 ... schuk.html
In the days after Steve Spott landed a job as a rookie assistant coach for the Toronto Maple leaves in July, he was tasked with a bevy of responsibilities by head coach Randy Carlyle.
Among them, Spott was charged with devising a new breakout play for a team that has long struggled to get the puck out of its own end. Spott thought he’d hit on an effective strategy — until, that is, he shared the plan with leaves leading scorer Phil Kessel. When Kessel voiced displeasure, Spott discovered a harsh reality of life in the NHL. In some corners of the league, and apparently in Leafland, a coach’s learning curve involves bending to the desires of certain star players.
… “Spott said Carlyle’s attitude was that we’re fired before (Kessel is) out of here, the hierarchy doesn’t want to deal with Phil. He scores 30 (goals) a year and that’s all they want,” said one of the attendees. “(Spott said) Phil hates coaches. He hates Randy. He hates me and I don’t even know him yet.”
… Spott also marvelled at how Kessel — who Spott estimated during the lecture is “15 pounds overweight” — remains an explosive speedster.
I doubt "big Shea Weber" could "keep Kessel in check" any better than big Dion Phaneuf...mathonwy wrote:This is a straight up Phil Kessel problem and is the primary reason why he disappears during the playoff push (see Mason Raymond). Nobody is uncoachable. You just need a coach that is smarter than the player
And comparing Phaneuf to Shea Weber is comparing apples and kiwis. Phaneuf commands ZERO respect in this league. He's a joke. I saw it in the 24/7 series and I've seen it in All Star games which leads to my rotten apple core hypothesis about the Laughs.
And its fun actually having logical discussions about hockey in general (the Laughs or otherwise).
Sorry for raining on your parade ringleader mod StrangeLove.
KESSEL IS TEH SUCK!!!
PS. I also think quite highly of Kadri. The kid has talent and he's a grade A asshole. Two qualities you just can't learn.

Kane has won 2 cups because of where he plays.

Exactly. They're the exact same player. Kane just plays with better teammates. It's hard to put any stock into the decision making prowess of an organization that makes Dion Phaneuf its captain til 2020/21 and dedicates 5.25M of cap space till 2019/20 to David Clarkson for ONE 30 goal season.Strangelove wrote:If Kadri were a grade A asshole, the Leaves wouldn't have been trying to trade his ass all summer.mathonwy wrote: I also think quite highly of Kadri.
