In my never-ending attempt at distraction to avoid the reality of the Canuck’s current plight, and to avoid any discussion of the players in the actual line-up, while still fulfilling my obligation to create a somewhat topical Game Day Thread, I present the socio-political-economic reasoning to cheer for the Buffalo Sabres during the 2026 playoffs:
* Capitalism (Win/Win): Peaceful co-existence of fair trade, innovation, luck, industry and growth. This is the Nirvana of the NHL—a state of grace enjoyed only by ownership, player agents, the 1970s Canadiens, the 80s Oilers, Gary Bettman, and Bill F’in’ Daly.
* Mercantilism (Win/Lose): Trump politics, the exploitation of the weak, colonialism, cronyism, and dog-eat-dog competition. This is the natural state of hockey for most every NHL team that isn't a 1970s expansion cousin.
* Communism (Lose/Lose): Failure in all aspects of the human condition, the cursed and the damned—Buffalo and Vancouver.
Obviously, in the unlikely event that one of these damned teams breaks the lose/lose cycle and lifts Lord Stanley’s Cup, it would act as an exorcism for the expansion class, removing all curses. Buffalo winning would shatter the perennial lose/lose barrier and open the possibility that the Canucks could eventually do the same - perhaps - maybe - someday in the far, far distant future.
Yes, we’ll all be dead by then, but think of the children!
Go Buffalo Go!
