If you divide the total of tariffs charged with the total of the trade value, the average EU tariff on US goods is 2.59% and the average US tariff on EU goods is 2.49%. So yeah - there's some truth to the statement that the EU has higher tariffs on US goods than vice versa, but the difference is minute and basically negligible. So where did the 39% come from?

Some were suggesting that Trump considered VAT a tariff, but that's just crazy. VAT is added to all goods, whetehr domestic or imported, so it does not provide a disadvantage for foreign companies. And also, even if you added some sort of mean or median EU VAT to the tariffs you would get nowhere near 39%. Another suggestion was that other trade barriers were somehow recalculated as tariffs, but those are a different story.

You are not allowed to sell chlorinated chicken or hormone-treated meats in the EU. But that's because those practices are banned here. Likewise there is a whole list of food additives that are common in the USA but banned in the EU. So that you can't import that stuff is not really a trade barrier per se, even if the USA thinks so. It is because those products are considered a health hazard and you are not allowed to sell them within the EU regardless of which country they are produced in. Just like the US doesn't want fentanyl.

Yes Per, similar with dairy in Canada, we do not allow hormone fed milk. Trump likes to cite Canada's high duty rate on dairy. The threshold of duty free imports was raised in the NAFTA to USMCA negotiation and that threshold has never been met. The duty has never been charged.

Don't think I've seen that before, but sure, it does look aesthetically pleasing.

Most people would sort alphabethically or by tariff percentage, but whoever did this is truly thinking outside the box!

It's not even by number of letters, they're taking font into the calculation, so while Brazil and Israel have 6 letters and China and Japan only five, the i:s and l:s make the names of the former two more slender and thus shorter in length and brings them up the list.

I'm trying to keep up with all of the various rationals into why this is a bad thing or why this is a good thing long term...

But if the likes of the Wall Street Journal and the markets are telling you that its a dumb thing, its probably a very dumb thing...

I mean when you place a 50% tariff on on the African nation of Lesotho, whose average citizens earn less than $5.00 per day but because they are too poor to buy American made goods while exporting $237 million in diamonds resulting in a trade deficit you know it wasnt' very well thought out...

Thinking about Canada, its encouraging to hear the stories about doctors and scientists and other highly skilled workforce looking to move to or back to Canada or rethinking their decision to move to the US...
