Trump at the National Prayer Breakfast: "The water comes down from the northwest parts of Canada, I guess, but the Pacific Northwest. And it comes down by millions and millions of barrels a day and uh, I opened it up. It wasn't that easy to do. But I opened it up and it's pouring down."

Re: It's getting warm
As my lights were flickering late last night and there was forecasts for heavy rain possible hail with very strong winds with micro tornadoes a possibility, I was glad to have natural gas heat, hot water and stove to go with my gas powered truck.
My neighbour with solar panels on his roof would have been concerned about the hail where I'd be OK with a few candles.

I still think hybrid style technology is the way to push ahead with cars and light trucks rather than full electric drivetrains reliant on external charging. Mining heavy haulers have been diesel over electric hybrids for decades due to their reliability and longevity.

Doesn't hybrid mean twice the technology I.e twice the maintenance? Why not stick with gas until batteries are light compact and can last for a thousand km?

There is little to no maintenance required on the electric portion other than the well discussed storage of energy issue.5thhorseman wrote: ↑Thu Mar 27, 2025 6:46 pm Doesn't hybrid mean twice the technology I.e twice the maintenance? I do believe the future is to move away from ICE's but they need a breakthrough. It's close but not there yet
One solution I'm following is how to utilize the vehicles momentum to generate more efficiently. Why are they losing so much energy still? It seems to me like this should be the path forward

If you listen to the taxi industry hybrids require considerably less maintenance than gas or diesel vehicles...5thhorseman wrote: ↑Thu Mar 27, 2025 6:46 pm Doesn't hybrid mean twice the technology I.e twice the maintenance? Not sure if it's still available on line but years ago a writer in Vancouver did a study using statistics from a local taxi company and extracted those findings across the taxi industry in North America....
At the time gas was $1.50 litre and the taxi companies were reporting that they could pay off the cost of a new taxi in less than 3 years from fuel and maintenance cost savings...
Taking those findings across the number of taxis in North America he suggested that there would be in excess of a $50 Billion dollar savings per year if they all converted to hybrids..
As a former Toyota dealer, I had taxis in my shop with over 500,000 km's that were still cost efficent to run and never had a company move away from hybrid back to gas...
As far as a battery good for 1,000 km, Toyota has developed a solid state battery that not only meets your distance desire but also fully charges in less than 10 minutes...

The challenge for Governments with electric only cars is how do they replace the taxes collected at the gas pumps?
Not sure if anything has changed but in Toyota's world electric only is a stepping stone to hydrogen fuel cell hybrids...https://www.toyota.ca/en/electrified/hy ... fuel-cell/
And easier for governments to collect fuel taxes....

Re: It's getting warm
Alberta collects a $200 EV surtax every year when you renew your rego (at least I think it's every year) to compensate

When I was down in Anaheim for a couple of weeks last summer, all but 2 or 3 of the Uber’s that I hopped into were Toyota hybrids. When I watched how often they were running off of battery there’s no doubt that there is a fuel savings. The fact that so many of the drivers use them would seem to be the common sense proof that there is an economic advantage to them.
Also, Toyota warrantees the hybrid side of things for a decent period of time too. Or at least they did a couple of years ago.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..
Re: It's getting warm
When you consider that they introduced the first hybrid in 1997 and spend some $30 million per day on R&D, I think they have it nailed...Generally the proof is in the pudding.
And of note over the past number of years they have been registering patents on flying car components...Last I heard it was over 3,000 patents...
