It hasn't necessarily aged all that well given Thatcher's apparent recovery but then again that isn't a given either is it

I'll give them a pass on that one

Really my number one issue with this regime is fucking around with the Zadorov situation and losing that character from the mix. To a lesser extent losing Cole was another flub I'm not fond of but most of the other moves haven't been that bad in my eyes
The advantage the Canucks have over us and the rumor spreaders is that they know things like Demko's health and contract demands along with his market value around the league...

They know the market value for Silvos and where they slot him amongst the other highly prized goalie prospects in the system like a Ty Young....

Listening the afternoon show on 650 I think they might have nailed the Canucks direction ...

They have a top 5 blue line group...

They have elite goaltending with Demko and Lank as the back up...

Assuming last year was a one off for EP, they have an elite player at the centre, defence and goalie positions...

They recognize how difficult and expensive it is to aquire skilled players so they are going after big, fast less skilled forwards like a Kane to add to a group with includes the likes of O'Connor and DeBrusk and Sherwood and Joshua to build around the core 3...

Even the recent signing of Ravinskis fits that mould...big powerforward who skates well...

When you compare Florida to Edmonton, Florida's top players are Selke type players while Edmontons top players are Art Ross type players...Much harder to find Art Ross type players than Selke type players...

Almost like they are building a Pat Quinn type of team...big, fast and tough to play against...

Take care...

I listened to most of it, and gotta say I was impressed. Very poised, and of course 'that suit' ;) If he can be that level-headed around his teammates, there might be hope.

Yeah, thank god. That would also be the final year of the huge OEL buy out cap hit. After next season OEL's buyout hit is manageable. Still wouldn't like to see Garland signed for 7 mil per though, hopefully it will be much closer to 6.5 mil per.

Will be interesting to see how long they wait to start negotiating Kane's next deal...

The Blankinen contract is a bit long, but I think at the time they wanted the insurance. They weren't sure about Demmer's health/durability and they had question marks if Silovs can play @ the NHL lvl. I think we should just trade Demmer and be done with it. Just go with the guy who doesn't have the injury issues and the young backstop who looks like he can step up in the big games/playoffs. Sign a cheap 3rd string goalie that we'd be willing to expose on waivers as insurance.

I'd prefer to move out Gnarly8 and use that cap space to address our centre ice position. We have some wingers in the system (ie: Karly94, Bains, Lekkerimaki) and they're generally easier to find/acquire out there.

I would be all for this if I was on the camp of tear it all down now and unload every asset including Quinn. Because goaltending wouldn’t really matter anymore anyway. (I may get there yet)

But if you still care about how this season turns out and hope it leads to a Quinn extension, trading Demmer now is about the riskiest, dumbest moves you can make. That is unless you can get a mid 20’s top line center in return for him. Who’s giving up a mid 20’s top line center for an injury prone goalie? Nobody. The best you can hope for is a middle 6 guy, someone like Chytil. I’m sorry, I am not sacrificing our potentially biggest difference-making strength for another Chytil just to fill a gap. Demmer sitting in the press box is worth more imo just to know he’s there and his potential is available at worst.

I’m really surprised how this market is so dismissive of Demko’s importance despite his injury concerns. Everybody on the team could bounce back and have great seasons. None of it will matter if Lankinen is a pumpkin and Silovs shows he can only handle AHL shooters. Lank was good last year for about 4 months when he all but matched Demmer’s numbers. He did that with no expectations and a major security blanket sitting on the shelf. Now remove Demko from the mix, he’s suddenly THE guy and with zero margin for error. It’s a completely different mentality to have to shoulder that kind of pressure. Same for Silovs. This is why there are always a handful of goalies who look phenomenal one year and can’t repeat it the next. If both guys falter, there’s virtually nothing anybody can do to salvage the season.

I’d love to see Lankinen prove me wrong and show that last season was no fluke. Until he does I’m not taking that chance. A team like the Oilers can get away with sub-average goaltending. This team can’t.

The athletic twittered a ranking of all the NHL teams by position:

The Canucks:

Center: 27th
Wingers: 28th
Defense: 5th

Loved this quote about it:

“Canucks have one of the best defensive groups in the league. All it took was nuking the forward group.”

And a lot of chumps that don't watch games get their "knowledge from these sorts of sites.

Chef, come clean. You are a fan of managements.... not the players, certainly not the game. You were no fan of Quinn, Burke or Gillis, but thought Randy Bo Bandy did well. You ate the corn from Benning's bum and continue to do so.

Is there an off button to press? You repeat the same shit twenty times a day. Why not look at what they might do with the 8.5 million remaining in cap space instead of regaling everyone all hours of the day how enraged you are that they fired the guy that helped you understand his three and four letter words? Or don't... I guess

If they're a smart/responsible management group they'd wait till Feb/March to see how things shake out not just from Kane's performance but more importantly the team's to weigh extension over sell.

Yet I wouldn't be surprised anymore if they announce an extension next week.

You are a miserable soul. We know they need to work on the forward group. The off season just started. You won't shut up about it.

Enjoy yourself. I'm taking a breather from this shit for a few days.

Carry on.

I hear we are interested in more middle 6 forwards. Hearing the Canucks are kicking tires on Bjugstad and Maccelli. Can’t have enough middle six. We lead the league.

I'm still not. There were question marks when he came into the League, and he, we, and the Canucks are lucky he's lasted as long as he has. Every additional month we get of near-peak Demko represents more excellent dividends on what turned out to be a great gamble at the drafting table, but it would be rash to count on any more to the point of planning the team construction around it.

Unless whoever wins the back-up job absolutely craters (and it shouldn't be that hard to put in an adequate goaltending performance behind a quality defence), I hope they really limit Demko's games through the early and middle part of the season, so that he's as healthy and sharp as theoretically possible for any stretch run or playoff games.

He had also just enjoyed the longest most productive stretch of his career so was likely going to be sought after, if I recall. I would think they didn't want to run the risk of having nobody left to stop pucks.

Again, in hindsight it ends up an overpayment but at the time I think they were quite concerned
