i'm certain the management has talked to hughes first before making the move?
Maybe.
Apparently MacKinnon was not informed of the Ranatanen move.

My best hope is they keep the pick and use it to rebuild the lame as fuck Prospect pool they’ve butchered.

Don’t mind the Canucks trading their own 1st this year in a Hronek style deal, but hang on to that Rangers pick. It could be huge if thinks go south in NY.

Maybe they traded a toxic prick to help a fractured dressing room.
...or you could look at it that our current illustrious Management team signed both players to long term deals, ignoring what you imply to be true (6 years here and all of a sudden Miller is a toxic prick) and that, over anything else, should be our real concern.
Yep, mgmt wears a lot of this egg on their faces. Though I'm glad some action finally happened. It was festering.
No matter what you think of the person. I will 100% trade the 32 year old with 5 years remaining, than the 26 year old. Just makes sense. Petey has out played Miller this season when you look at most metrics.

So is the pic protected in this draft only or also next draft?

I’d rather keep both. I imagine the Rangers are not going be top 13 bad this year. If we could have two picks in the teens that bodes well to restocking the pipeline

...and they're going to go South because JT Miller is a locker room cancer is the hope?

With respect to this subject, on the quoted point, we are in full agreement.

Keeping Petey over Miller was the right move moving forward. Millers age was always a concern.

Well the Filips are said to be friends. I guess that helps the locker room.

His best bud is Vincent Trochek. They'll enjoy a solid bump I'm guessing

It sounds like Miller was holding players accountable, especially Pete, but maybe he just did it in too toxic a manner. There's a big void now and Huggy needs to fill it. There's as much pressure on him as on Pete.
Maybe, but we've heard nothing of the prior 6 years when 6/49 was a thing. How come that never happened? Yeah, it's fine colleagues aren't best buds, every workplace is the same including yours and mine.
Bunch of people slurping the media narrative. I'll believe the ex-teammates who vouch for guys like that. Lots of them tell stories about tough and exacting teammates they loved playing with... even if they argued and had many disagreements at practice. Remember all the stories Bieksa has been telling about the old teams. You think they wouldn't be considered toxic these days the way they held each other accountable and competed to get better?

No he hasn't. Given the contract's expectation, he's been the biggest drain on the team other than the sad-sack D and below-average goaltending of Demko. Both centers have been below par.
The fact that he still isn't the primary option on an offensive unit, still doesn't run the PP, still can't win draws to be put in those positions in important moments of the game in either zones... that is exactly what the GM was saying in the interview. He can be a #1 center(?), but clearly hasn't been good for almost an entire year now.
You keep a guy based on impact... wins, production, etc., not just age. Age is a primary factor, but not the sole one when you're thinking about your most important player entering his prime and HIS window.

You know the return looks shitty but I predict posters here will, over the next day or so, begin to rationalize and believe it was not all that bad. "Miller's getting old when he had another season or two in him". "We got back pretty much the same draft pick that we use to get him." "Toxic, that's all he's worth anyways." Etc etc.
Well yeah, if you look at this whole situation as it's time to move on, then dumping a 32 y.o. with a massive ticket remaining seems to me like an OK solution no matter the return. That's the positive anyway but hard to say if we're better off.
The pros:
We get off a potential anchor contract tied to an old guy.
We free cap space and flexibility.
We now have assets to use for a better deal.
We now get to focus on going younger.
We lose the toxicity in the room (which might be the most important aspect if we do go younger with JT's personality potentially affecting the kids).
The cons:
We lose a warrior. And if we do somehow sneak into the playoffs, it would be a total gut punch to not have THAT in the lineup.
We don't get a great return, even though it can still be flipped for better.
The biggest con of all is if this potentially sparks a tankjob, does it start the clock ticking on Hughes' desire to join his bros in a year and a half? Then another decade of dark pit of despair may just be on the horizon for us longsufferers.
