Although it is not known as to why he changed the name to Maple leaves, here was Smythe's reasoning:

It was a badge that meant more to us than any other badge that we could think of... so we chose it... hoping that the possession of this badge would mean something to the team that wore it and when they skated out on the ice with this badge on their chest... they would wear it with honour and pride and courage, the way it had been worn by the soldiers of the first Great War in the Canadian Army."

There is a display board at work dedicated to canada for kids to learn about the awesomest country in the world.
The guy who put it up is from Toronto and he put a leaf pennant on it. Every time I walk by it I take the staples out and turn it around and staple it back on backwards and upside down.

If I had a Canuck pennant is glue it on over top of the offensive blue leaf

And why are you bringing up army units in Toronto? Why do you think it has to be named after a Toronto unit. No one has ever claimed it was. The unit wasn't named "Toronto Maple leaves", it was just Maple leaves.

Tell you a little story. My wife has a niece who is finishing her PHD. She's originally from Kamloops (which is in the interior of BC, our province since you know nothing because you're afraid that if you wander past the lakehead, you'll fall off the face of the earth) and during her pursuit of her degree she has lived in Manchester, London, Montreal, St John's and Mexico City. Right now she's in Toronto. Guess what? She hates the place and can't wait to get out.

The only way that leaf can be pluralized is if one is referring to a collection of many different kinds of leaves otherwise more than one leaf are referred to as leaves

When the bumble fuck Clarence cowbell decided to cheapen our national symbol for his own personal gain he should have called them the maple leaves because that at least would be grammatically correct.
However, he did not. And thousands or perhaps millions of leaf fans can go fuck themselves.

Especially one who by the gracious patience of the people who inhabit a Vancouver Canucks (notice the pluralization) message board, who allow you a voice only to constantly hear about how wonderful a team whose owner vowed to never let Vancouver into the league and prevented Vancouver from being an original expansion team.

No. I laugh at their ineptitude. Since 1967, they have been a terrible team. Harold Ballard almost seems like the bright spot in the last 47 years for the franchise. Leaves fans try to insult the Canucks for not having a Cup, but at least we have made it to the finals 3 times in the last 44 years.

I respect a handful of players, but not the team.

In 1971 I had to spend 3 months (seemed like a fucking eternity) working in TO. What a fucking dump. I actually put a curse on the leaves when I had to sell my guitar and ghetto blaster to get a plane ticket back to Vancouver.
