Just think...Topper follows this shit for entertainment!

I think I'll let him be the expert on that subject thanks while i focus on more mind expanding topics
Here's my hypothesis: if folks around here didn't use single game Corsi's as evidence of performance or 3 game Corsis (as someone did recently to conclude Gaudette was a defensive liability), Topper never asks about T-tests.

My "Leivo off the roster" campaign hasn't gone as well, but it's still early yet...

I will not relent.
I'm with ya on this one, Hank. But, Leivo isn't cooperating right now. He looks good on a red hot team, but I think he's a tweener, and would complement the fuck out of Boucher and Goldobin down in Utica.
Leivo's cooperation has nothing to do with other players playing well enough to make up for his .5-NHL-player-presence in the lineup.

Maybe folks might not poke the crabby old prick if he didn’t try to sell us on Erik Gudbranson and Luca Sbisa being solid players the past few years.

A lot of my work involves statistical analysis. It is why I find a lot of the fancy start nonsense so comical.

I’m not a fancy stats guy. Most of it is unproven in hockey. There are certain aspects that can be useful but I trust what I see more than looking at a spreadsheet. My 20-20 vision tells me Gudbranson and Sbisa were awful players. Stecher isn’t great but he’s definitely better than either of those guys.

I'd rather watch a game a second time to figure out players individual strengths and weaknesses. I don't mind giving the advanced stats a look,
(just to see if I was right or wrong, or even in agreement). It's no way to coach though, IMO.

Stecher's contract is up. No need for angst. He will play this entire year though, I would think, unless there is someone within the organization
that is ready. If there was, a trade deadline move could be possible but doubtful as they would want back-up if playoff bound. He might not be offered a new contract and most certain;y not a raise. He's very much a homer but his agent would no doubt advise him to keep an open mind to a move.

Yup.

Big-sample-size Corsi stats have proven to be flawed, but small-sample-size stats of any kind are a total joke.

Corsi stats are nowhere near as revered as they were a few years ago (thank God).

Yet I still witnessed a few super-geeks going at it BIG time in the Marner threads at HF this summer.

It's amazing how one geek can convince the masses how phenomenal a player is... using copious amounts of numbers

... only to see another geek can come along and prove Geek #1 completely missed the boat due to X, Y, and Z.

Listen, I'm not saying stats can't be useful BUT.

"Lies, damned lies, and statistics"... time to start watching the games again you nerds! :D

I was asked to provide statistical analysis of defensive pairings and forward performance with various defensive pairings. A laughable request.

Several years ago I provided a rough calculation that you would need over 60 games before the basic hypothesis of fancy stats would become workable. Even then, it would be irrelevant at the edges of the data set.

And bringing it full-circle, the fancy-stats told some geek that Stecher is the best penalty-killing defenceman in the entire league!

That article was what made me turn completely against fancy-stats.

Blackhawks, Jets, Sens were watching the Canucks vs LA.

Whom could they be interested in?

Blackhawks: Stecher
Jets: Stecher
Sens: Virtanen, Markstrom, Eriksson (cap move)
