If his production remains (or gets better) and his 200 foot game improves even a little, this is a good contract.

I hope there’s no trade protection tho.
It is a very good deal if they didn’t want to let him go. Anything similar to what he did last year was going to get him
more in arbitration. As I mentioned earlier this summer, his raw production is not terribly out of line with Garland’s when he signed his deal. I wasn’t seeing 4.95 M, but I was thinking with the increased cap $4M — 4.5M was possible. Which is why I suggested trading him. Because I wouldn’t want him at that number and he’d bring a return today.

UWSaint wrote: Sun Oct 06, 2024 4:58 pm Interesting deal. I guess a 4th is worth 1.1 million? (Poolman salary sent minus brannstrom’s salary). That’s not bad.

Upside of getting rid of Poolman contract is that Canucks will have some salary accruing for a mid season pick up (most likely). I expect Canucks will send Baines or Raty (or both) down when Joshua’s back, subject to other injuries. And Silovs will be assigned once Demko is ready. Canucks wont have 2.5 from waiving all of those guys since they will keep at least 22 healthy (I suspect), but another 800+ minimum will be added to the 437.

The Abby team was already loaded with defensemen. Now it is silly. Wonder if Canucks will be able to move any low-prob d prospects for a low prob goalie or forward prospect. Or maybe loan one out. What’s the point of having Wolanin in the system at this point?
With Brannstrom being waived we clear 2 million in cap. We can now carry a full 23 man roster, with players on IR, and still be about $500,000 u see the cap. Once Demko and Joshua are back we send 2 players down and clear more cap. Allvin has pulled another rabbit out of the hat.

We're assuming Poolman's contract is uninsured, which as we've discussed is a fair assumption.

(and this trade makes that seem even more likely)

His cap-hit is $2.5M, but his actual salary is $3M this year.

So I guess a 4th is worth $1.6 million?

Good trade for both teams, saves us $2M on the cap as Wids pointed out.

And COL is headed for LTIR anyway with Landeskog, so no skin off their nose in that department.

The $2M in extra cap-space COL takes on puts them right up against the cap.

Which of course is where you want to be to fully utilize LTIR... so it helps COL there.

This deal makes sense for both teams and I don't think Nucks care much if Brannstrom clears.

If he gets claimed it saves Canucks $900K in real dollars.

If he clears he becomes more valuable as a player who can go up and down for a time without further waivers.

(also his real dollar$ owed goes down as the season progresses)

(assuming some team wants him)

Canucks did indeed claim Patera. Lots of movement around the league on the wire today. Brannstrom cleared.

Did the Canucks make a final round of cuts or is it because of Demko and Joshua being on IR, they didn't have to?

It's like he never left.

Canucks appear to be at 50 under contract, which 2 exempt from the 50 (Arliksson and Mynio).

It's been a tidy piece of GMing by the Balderson's this preseason along with a little bit of luck.

Correct. He does not need to clear waivers. We now have a 23 man roster, two on IR and $580,000 below the cap. It’s been a long time since we have this type of breathing room. Once Joshua is back one of Raty, Aman, or Sprong will get sent down, barring any other injuries of course. One would assume it would be Raty as he is waiver exempt but he will get the chance to show it shouldn’t be him.

Once Demko is back one would assume Silovs would be the one sent down as he doesn’t need waivers either.

Both Joshua and Demko are said to be 3-4 weeks from returning. But that is early speculation as well. If accurate and assuming no further injuries and assuming it is Raty and Silovs sent down, we would have just over 2 million in cap space.

Tidy piece of business by Allvin for sure. Both Patera and Brannstrom cleared waivers so Abbotsford just got a little better too.

The defence is still too thin. Top two guys are great but it’s a swan dive off the Burj Khalifa (the Mëds of towers) after that

Soucy and Myers are capable of 18-20 min of hard ice time. Deharnais looks ok. Forbort looks like a 6/7/8 guy. Much like Vinny, Juulsen and Friedman. They need a 4/5 LH D man that can give you decent AS ice time. He either anchors that third pair or he plays with Tyler Myers on the second pair.

They are finally getting some younger up to speed. They still need to keep throwing picks at the ass end. One of these guys like KK, Mynio, EP2, Alcros.... etc will become a full time player.

They have some breathing room for the cap now, so let's see what they do.
