Brock said in his meet the press that as FA opened he was at the gym but couldn't work out as he was on the phone with his agent. They had several offers from teams that were in the ballpark and he was talking them all over with his agent. He was trying out different scenarios and trying to get his emotions around certain fits, imagining playing for different teams. He said none of them made him feel good as he had a sick feeling in his stomach. During their conversations his agent interrupted and said Patrick was calling. So his agent spoke to Patrick and they passed around a few ideas and for the first time in months he felt it was possible he could get a deal done. Said he told his agent just get it done. And it came together rather quickly. He added that he had Garland and Demko in his ear encouraging him to get the deal done and stay and that was huge for him.
Other reports have said his agent's magic number was 50 million. So it was a matter of the right term to make the cap work. I suppose we could have kept the term shorter, 5 years, and given him 10 per
So the story is as it seems. Both he and the Canucks needed FA to open so they could both see that there was a viable market for Boeser. Perhaps because of the low ball offers at TDD the Canucks believed he would not get close to the 50 million but once they saw that he was going to get that somewhere, perhaps even more, they circled back and increased both term and cap. Brock needed to get to FA to feel the pain at leaving and he was able to compromise and take a bit less and put aside any hard feelings. Allvin had always said that he would circle back when FA opened to make one last effort, which he did. As a side note, Boeser was in Europe the last 2 weeks and was not really communicating with the Canucks. It was a purposeful getting away from it and trying not to focus on July 1st. He only got back to Canada June 29/30.
So perhaps this is a good example of both parties being patient and not doing something reactive. While I would have liked a 5 year term I am happy with the cap. And his last 2 years he has a modified trade clause so he is moveable, or as we have seen in the past, perhaps not.
Allvin sort of suggested that there was an intention to getting Demko and Garland locked up by July 1 for its influence on free agency. The way he told the story it implied a master stroke to get Brock, but honestly I can see the positive signal it would send to any multi-year seeking free agent who wants to envision who else has term.
In contrast, there's nothing that's happened since the Stanley Cup Finals that would answer any questions McDavid may have about committing to Edmonton long term. They lost secondary scoring and a defensive center, and gained Mangiapone. Fart.
Sure, Bouchard committed, but I would think that was a given, and frankly, the Oilers are surpassing the first round and out Leaves with a top heavy salary structure, and so the future looks like more whack a mole, more no one ELSE stepping up....

Seems like it was planned all along
Allvin wasn’t the only Canuck who made a call in an effort to bring Boeser back to Vancouver.
“I had other guys in my ears, like Gar [Conor Garland] and Demmer [Thatcher Demko] and all those guys kind of pushing my buttons to come back too,” Boeser said. “So it obviously plays a big part to have such good friends and have belief in the guys in the room.”

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman
Pierre-Olivier Joseph to a one-year contract worth $775,000.

Why? I thought they were good on D.
Hope it doesn't cause a log jam.

Exactly - maybe it was a good deal, maybe someone is getting moved? Still early in the summer.

Exactly. Let the kids cook in Abby if they don't make the top 6; let the #7 be a player like Joseph. Actually, this kind of move was top on my list of FAs at this point. Would have preferred a right shot, but he's played both sides, I think.

Why not just bring McWard back on a one year deal?

Because the point is for #7 to be an experienced NHL player (Joseph has about 200 games). McWard isn't that. The idea is that the extra guy you lug around is used to what he gets thrown into and you know what you are going to get, and your prospects are getting games in Abby; longer injuries you will go for a prospect call up for a few games, cap permitting. But McWard would have been fourth on RD prospect depth chart for a call up if DEP is on main roster. (Willander, Woo, and Mancini, are all ahead of McWard).
Ultimately it is 50 man roster management and maybe a little recognition that McWard was blocked in Vancouver but might have a better shot elsewhere (so give the kid a chance to go elsewhere).

Pius signs in St. Louis. 2 years, $4M AAV. Guess Allvin couldn't clear the space.
It is an excellent fit for the player and the Blues, IMO. Doesn't seem like a "win" for Suter financially; I would have thought at that AAV he could have gotten more term, but maybe he is betting on himself. If he scores more that 20 each of the next two seasons, he'll get a raise.
You'd have to think he was offered that from Vancouver before free agency, no?

McWard wound up signing with the Islanders.
I wish him luck.

That's pretty good money for what he brings to the table. It seems like a good fit.
I have no idea how they would have fit that under the cap here; it would have taken some maneuvering.
