Reality is likely that unless he loved it here enough to take a hit, he's not going to stay. much to my disappointment

Article predicts $8M x 7 and they are probably right on that one.

I'm fully decompressed from the playoff run and I've had time reconsider (adjust) my approach to the offseason.
I'm now thinking as follows:
Sign Filip Hronek to a three year contract at a reasonable cap hit.
Sign Tyler Myers to a very affordable two year deal.
Bid adieu to the rest of the contingent of UFAs and wish them every success in their future endeavors.
And trust in the near genius hockey acumen of the Baldies to assemble a supporting cast from the bargain bin, via trade, Euro free agency etc and hope the new group of mercenaries can produce similar, or even better results than the last one.

It's just a quickie that Chris Johnston pulled out of his ass, he's got Brodie signing for $5.1x4 or something and 40 year old Joe Pavelski for $7.4x3.UWSaint wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 2:59 pmHow can anyone take seriously a list that has T.J Brodie as a higher demand player than Nikita Zadorov? Here I was thinking Brodie may be destined for PTO territory.... And is there any team out there that is thinking, Tyler Myers -- no, but that Anthony Beauvillier! (I get Myers is at that age, but his play isn't declining yet.)Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 2:14 pmOf the three I want Zadorov the most. I worry about giving Joshua too much money, he can be a floater and can come across as indifferent. If there is the potential for a bad contract it’s Joshua.
Lindholms age combined with the contract he can garner to me is a bad combination regarding cap flexibility
I don't know that Joshua is a floater, but his skating is not good so it looks like it. Nothing to do with speed, everything to do with inability to make tight turns. He has to be on the play to be in the play. He also lacks in being "ready" both posturally and with his stick. And has the penchant to take a dumb penalty that isn't the result of being on the edge but it simply dumb (he got better at that, though, he does learn). His passing, puckhandling, penalty killing, and body positioning all improved during his time here, and he's definitely a fair amount better that the tweener he came in as. He'll make some team a little better, if its the Canucks, good. If the Canucks move on and look for the next one, fine.
Lindholm is a good player and would be a great asset to have, but I also worry about contract length. If the Canucks didn't have Miller, its one thing, but locking up a couple decent paycheck forwards in their 30s for long term is a doubles the risk. If the role is "complementary player," some flexibility is required. I don't see Lindholm thinking short term and I think the market will have long term options for him, and if I were him and his agent, I'd be looking at maximizing the total $$ figure on the contract, which means the longer the better. Especially since I think there will be interest from teams in a "win now" mode. He's not going to have to go through a rebuild to get paid.
If there's no long term market/demand for Chandler Stephenson, he's an interesting 2-3 year acquisition for a similar role; Monahan would be worth a look, too, if the term was measured.
I thought it was something we could kick around here anyway and it did seem to do the trick

I was referring to Megs first post he was quoting from some website having Lindholm at 6.7mil x 5 years, not the Athletic oneStrangelove wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 4:35 pm Article predicts $8M x 7 and they are probably right on that one.
again not that I think he'll go for that..

If other teams want to pay out stupid contracts let them. Lindholm is not worth close to 8, he is 29 and his contract will be a boat anchor in 3 years.
Hronek is also not worth $8 but a hell of a lot closer to it than Lindholm. Hronek is just not someone they can afford without scrimping on the bottom 3. He reportedly turned down a $52M offer (not sure how many years). I didn’t see enough from him to see him carry the 2nd pairing.
The Canucks have a big raise coming to QH and also the buyout hit. They need to tread lightly on any signings and look out at least 5 years as QH and EP are still young.
Also no trading anymore 1st round picks as they need some ELC coming in.

All I want is no more stupid contracts with this organization. All of Lindholm, Joshua and Zadorov have the potential for that. I guess let’s be careful what we wish for, I’m with Megs.

Keep in mind that contracts signed today are paid with tomorrows cap and that cap is expected to rise above $100 million by the time Hughes needs a new deal...2Fingers wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 10:53 pm If other teams want to pay out stupid contracts let them. I think with Hronek it comes down in large part to where they see Willander, do they project him to be a top 4 RHD and if so do they want to commit long term to Hronek at much larger dollars than Willander who will be on an entry level deal for at least 2 full seasons once he leaves college.
So maybe its best to qualify Hronek and kick the can down the road for another year to give more clarity on Willander with the understanding that there is risk that Willander doesn't develop and Hronek becomes a UFA...
While we get overly focused on top down contracts, I think the Canucks are focusing as much on their bottom up contracts and which players they feel are ready to move up to the parent club and in doing so help bring down the teams average salary cap....
Gotta think Raty and Sassons will see NHL games next year and if they resign Woo it would be on the understanding that he is ready to take the step up to the parent team...
Do they think EP2 and Lekkermaki will join Willander and be ready to join the parent club after next season and if so how does that impact who they give long term contracts to this season?
It's the kids in the system and on the farm team who pay the bills for the EP's and Millers so to speak and while the team doesn't have a deep system it does have 3 or 4 players who are critical to the team's ability to sign those expensive contracts...
Take care...
Re: 2024 Offseason - moving forward
You have to wonder whether that's the reason Yzerman was keen on moving him. Wasn't the player, it was projecting a difficult signing.
Of course the future returns are the benefit to Detroit for the trade, but replacing Hronek with Petry and Holl almost certainly cost them a playoff spot this year.

Re: 2024 Offseason - moving forward
This is the main issue this summer. Is QH a Norris winning defenseman because he finally got the right partner or is it more to do with timing and/or his development.
First half Hronek is a 7-8+/yr dman, second half is more like a 4-5/yr.
