The panic button looms

An $11.6M player should be bringing some of that edge. He should be a threat when he’s on the ice. Right now he’s a threat to give the opposing line an easy shift.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 7:36 am Don’t worry about Petey, it’s a long season FFS. It’s the overall team mix that is concerning to Chef, not seeing an “edge” with this group. Did they add soft only players to the mix? Wish we had signed Zadorov…somehow.
Tocchet called him out after last night's game. He's either going to dig in or the heat will be turned way up on him, and justifiably so.Mëds wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 10:48 amAn $11.6M player should be bringing some of that edge. He called him out over defensive coverage on one of the Flyer’s goals.Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 11:08 amTocchet called him out after last night's game. Yeah I just listened to it Mëds. Imagine if he was captain and doing whatever this is right now? That was supposedly a consideration if you recall.Mëds wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 11:11 amHe called him out over defensive coverage on one of the Flyer’s goals.Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 11:08 amTocchet called him out after last night's game. I could imagine another GM thinking "that player looked really great at one time, and it doesn't look like his body has been beaten to ratfuck yet; I bet he could still really shine in the right environment, and our team is likely to be that right environment".
You trade him to decent team for multiple picks. Said team will be projected to be picking in the bottom-10 the next few seasons. You get them to throw in a heart and soul guy that brings some wheels, size, and character and can play Tocchey Hockey, but won’t contribute more than 15G/30P.Ronning's Ghost wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 12:12 pmI could imagine another GM thinking "that player looked really great at one time, and it doesn't look like his body has been beaten to ratfuck yet; I bet he could still really shine in the right environment, and our team is likely to be that right environment".
But two problems:
1) what is a player like that, with a cap hit like that, worth to said GM? I'm thinking nothing so shiny and exciting as 5th overall draft pick. Maybe another player in exactly the same situation?
2) if said GM is right, and Pettersson does start playing like a player worth his draft position again, but the similar player the Canucks get back doesn't, that will reflect very badly on the ownership/management group.
So if we suppose that the ownership/management group cares about fan reaction (they're doing a better job if they don't, but I suspect that they might, since the Little Eagles do seem to operate with one eye on the marketing department), then moving him is riskier than keeping him.
In theory, the way to mitigate that risk is to target the player in the return deal that the local fans really love -- a real heart and soul, 100% effort player who brings some 'edge'. But players like that don't usually underperform in environments that aren't the best fit.
So although I agree that it might be the right move for everyone (with the knowledge available to the fanbase, and CC's insider has not offered anything more that I have seen), I predict that they don't do it.
I'm not saying it isn't a good plan, or that there couldn't be a GM of a competitive team that might be persuadable; I'm saying I don't think this ownership/management group would do it.Mëds wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 12:44 pm You trade him to decent team for multiple picks. With said draft capital you then offer sheet the shit out of a RFA.
