I doubt the NHL would allow Loui to keep his bonus money if he retires.
Such a thing has never happened and I'm pretty sure there's nothing in the CBA that covers it.
The NFL went through this with Barry Sanders when he retired in 1999.
It had never happened in the NFL and nothing in the CBA.
In the end NFL saw to it that Sanders returned the signing bonus.

Any issue if he retires and immediately signs in Sweden or the khl?
No, except I''ll bet the NHL makes him pay back this year's signing bonus.
Per: Thoughts ?
Lol, what would Per know about it?
Curious to know what Swedish hockey fans and press think about the
Van vs
L.E.conundrum.

I have no idea how this works, but thought that after July 1 he kept his dough no matter what? If that's not true I guess there's not much chance for him to retire. To the minors it is.

Loui: Ok how about I keep the bonus, and you guys can keep the rest?
And I'll see myself out.

Sounds good but I'll bet his agent would warn him the league might come after him for that bonus.
Otherwise such a precedent could become cap circumvention loophole... don't you think?

aha yeah the league wouldn't allow that, just wishful thinking.

Hey ya know who could use sven baertschi? the new jersey devils, they on the hunt for a LW and Swiss center Nico Hischier could use him on the 2nd line.
New Jersey Devils
Adding Jack Hughes through the draft and P.K. Subban through trade were two major additions to a Devils team still a few years away from being a top contender.
With just a handful of cheap RFAs still left to sign, New Jersey currently sits with $20 million in space
and in some need of help on the left side.
Taylor Hall already has the top spot open, but lining him beside Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier on the second line could make for a powerful scoring duo. A deal to New Jersey would almost certainly require sacrificing picks, however.

That's a good idea Skyo.
I like Baer + contract except for those damned concussions.
But we have Miller and Pearson now so...
If I'm the devs I flip a 3rd for Baer.
Well maybe a 5th cuz those damned concussions.

Ya this is what my concern was. If he gets 5M as a bonus, what year does it hit the cap? I mean they either stick it to us for one year or take it back.

I was reading the cba today, learning that Doc was correct about cap recapture only applying to old-CBA contracts, and I can tell you the CBA does cover cap hits from retirements, even mid-season.
Now, what the CBA actually says, I couldn't tell you with any certainty. But it's in there!

If the cap hit applies (and I'm sure it would) it would be for 2019-20.
I think if Loui retires tomorrow (or mutually terminates) there would be a $4M cap hit for Nucks for 2019-20.
(and zero cap hit for the years left on the contract)
But, as I say, I think the NHL would fight to make Loui pay back the $4M
... at which point the cap hit would come off the books.
I'm only guessing of course because taking the bonus and retiring has never happened before.
But there have been cases of retiring/MTing and the corresponding percentage of the cap hit remaining.
I remember Rodin having only a small part of his $700K counting on the cap after he MTed early in 2017 season.
Something similar happened with Brooks Laich in LA that same year.

Yeah mid-season retirements definitely result in partial cap hits, see my post above.
But summer retirements cancel the cap hit for the next season(s) completely.
(I remember this happening with the Leaves Marchenko a coupla years ago)
But again, a summer retirement after taking the signing bonus has never happened before
... so we can only guess as to the result.

Is there any chance he comes back and floats through another season? Benning mumbled something about penalty killing...i can see it happening
